My Story

9/3 UPDATE - We took Marmalade to the vet yesterday to have a mass removed from her leg and some x-rays on her spine to try and determine the cause of her fecal incontinence and slight paralysis. Her prognosis is not good. Unfortunately she has severe, progressive calcification of her spine. On the x-rays, her spine appeared to be double (triple in some places) the size it should be, huge knots of calcification... like boulders all along her spine. It is nearly fused into an inflexible rod and getting worse, and within a few months she will be completely paralyzed. She has such an incredible temperament. Marmalade is the absolute most loving dog you can imagine. It doesn't seem fair that just when she finally has a safe, happy future ahead of her, that she could be struck down by this. Her foster family is now her forever family and will give her a lifetime's worth of love and care in the time she has. Please keep Marmi and her family in your thoughts.

Meet Marmalade, a spayed harlequin Great Dane! At around 5 years old, this girl is a calm, family-loving pet. Marmalade has had a few babies herself, and loves the children (4 and 6 years old) in her foster home. She gets along great with other dogs and doesn’t seem to even notice when a cat walks by. Marmalade is very affectionate and a dream to walk on a leash. She has to walk carefully on hard floors but gets around pretty well despite a little stiffness in her hind end. Even so, she will still stick her rear-end up in the air and prance around like a puppy when you baby talk to her! After a life of confinement, she is finally learning what it's like to run and play outside. It took a few weeks for her to understand what freedom was, and she didn't even know how to wag her tail... but now she loves playing chase with her foster sister, a bothersome puppy!

Marmalade has a LOT of love to give, despite receiving very little loving attention in her former life. She has a calming, peaceful affect on everyone around her, and she is completely devoted to her "people." She needs a very special home where she can go outside when she wants to. Marmalade can be trusted not to pee in the house, but she sometimes has one "poop" accident during the night if she is kept inside all night. She will soon visit the vet to make sure that there isn't something medical to blame since she seems to understand that the house is not a place to go potty. Honestly, her foster mom says that the very easy clean up of her small "accidents" is TOTALLY worth the trouble since Marmalade is a perfect dog other than that small flaw. She had a rough life, and for her to have only that small problem after all she has been through, is miraculous.

If you are that very special person who has the kind of love Marmalade deserves, she will be your faithful, constant companion for life. This beautiful girl with one blue eye and one amber eye would love to finally settle into a stable life -- with you!

Marmalade's adoption fee is $300.
