My Story

Daphne – 2 year old female “Teddywidder” rabbit   In April this year a woman contacted me because she became overwhelmed with several accidental iltters of rabbits. She purchased two fancy “Teddywidder” rabbits (They are a mixture of fuzzy lop, lionhead, and angora rabbits) from a breeder and one was a male, the other a female. The woman quickly had 3+ litters of babies and became overwhelmed with the amount of care that they needed. These rabbits have incredibly soft, easily matted fur that needs frequent grooming and attention. They were also living in small hutches that were not cleaned regularly, so they were forced to sit in their own filth for months. The woman said she was going to try to find homes for them, but asked for my help if she could not. I did not hear from her for another month. On May 10th the owner contacted me because the last litter of babies she had suddenly passed away, and she was left with 5 rabbits that she could not find homes for. I knew that from the photos that she sent me that the rabbits were not in a safe place anymore, and they needed my help. Without any hesitation I took in all 5 rabbits, all with their own health issues. They all had respiratory infections, skin irritation, ear mites, walking dandruff and clearly were emaciated and not being fed properly.   Daphne had a serious case of urine scalding, and was severely underweight. She also had a mild respiratory infection. I rarely bathe rabbits unless completely necessary, she was in desperate need of a clean up. Daphne has gained almost a full pound since arriving at the rescue in May. She went through a course of medication to treat her urine scalding and respiratory infection as well as treatment for her ear mite infestation. She is still a bit of a shy rabbit and takes a bit to warm up to people, but she is fairly calm and easygoing when it comes to brushing time. She is a little protective of her space but I don’t blame her!   Daphne still needs to be spayed before she gets adopted into her new home. We are looking for someone to sponsor her procedure, the cost is around $400, but any contribution is appreciated!   Thanks to generous donations and a lot of TLC Daphne is on the road to recovery and is ready to find her new home.
