My Story

New Pictures 2/11/08:

UPDATE 2/7/08: Hi, everyone, I'm Zach! And I'm ready to find my forever family. I really like it here in New England. I know my old shelter intake photo from Arkansas isn't so great - it was horrible to have that chain digging into my throat! I've been healed for a while now and, if I can say so myself, I think I'm a pretty handsome fellow. Just imagine me with shinier fur, and without that ugly red mark on my neck.

I guess I'm a fairly uncomplicated dog. I like playing with other dogs, I love human attention, and I walk like a gentleman on a leash.

Some of you New Englanders may not know much about us Treeing Walker Coonhounds. Evidently we were bred by a gentleman named Mr. Walker, for endurance and hunting aptitude. We're a lot like many other dogs you may be more familiar with, only with a more refined sense of smell. I may be color blind, but my world is full of fascinating smells you humans can only imagine!

I'm also not as big as I look in some of my photos. My ideal weight is around 60 pounds, which puts me on the large side of medium-sized dogs.

My foster mother is pleased to report that my house training has been a success. Yippee! She'd love to tell you all the other great things about me, so ask about me today and make me the happiest hound around.

UPDATE 1/11/08: Zach's doing great in his foster home and coming out of his shell nicely. He has been loving and gentle with all the people he meets and thinks it's great fun to play with the foster family's resident dog. He recently met a four-year-old child and showed no aggression whatsoever.

Zach has learned to come when called. He loves to play outside, and would probably do well in a home where he had regular opportunities for off leash play and exercise.

He's also managed to put on a few pounds, so he's not as skinny and rangy as he was when he arrived from Arkansas. His house training is coming along well, too.

Please consider making this handsome, gentle hound a member of your family!

UPDATE 12/07/07: Zack is happy to be in New England, and he's well on his way to recuperating from his ordeal in Arkansas. He's still a little underweight, and his foster family is trying to fatten him up a bit. His healthy adult weight will probably be between 55 and 60 pounds - a nice medium/large dog.

Zach may not be a glutton, but he does, however, have an enormous appetite for human attention. He loves to cuddle and be where the people are.

Zach is a very gentle dog. When he jumps up, he does so very carefully. He walks nicely on a leash. His foster mother reports that Zach has shown no aggression or fearful behavior what-so-ever.

Zach loves to carry his toys around in his mouth, and he loves to play with his foster family's resident dog.

Zach's house training is going well. His foster mother has been taking him out at regular intervals and Zach seems to get it.

Zach is approx. 2 years old in these pictures taken June 16, 2007. He was transferred to our partner shelter in Arkansas because he had been tied up on a rope, not protected from the elements and was neglected.

When Zach arrived at the shelter, he was very skinny and had rope burns around his neck which are still visible in a few of the pictures. He is on antibiotics, and has been given wormer, vaccinations, and extra food to get him healthy. Shelter staff have found Zach to be a shy and gentle guy. He doesn't appear to have a mean bone in his body and gets along with every dog he has come in contact with. Zach didn't even try to fight when a volunteer had to put the antibiotics down his throat. He isn't real sure of people but we can tell he wants attention. He walks well on a leash too, however, he either wants to be very close to you for protection or is trying to duck for cover, depending on what is going on. Zach needs someone who is willing to give him the time to learn that not all people are mean. He has a lot of love to give. Zach is looking for a home that is on the quiet side, as we have noticed that if there is a lot of activity or noise in the yard he really cowers or hides.

Walker Hounds are scent hounds and are a dime a dozen in the south. Zachs chances of being adopted in his present location are slim to none. Scent hounds, if left to their own devices will be in the next state by noon. Zach will need a fenced yard, an underground fence, or someone that is diligent in keeping Zach on a leash when he is not in the house. Most Treeing Walker Hounds make loving family members and get along well with other dogs, as they are pack hounds.

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
