My Story

WE ARE NOT A SHELTER. WE ARE A NO-KILL 501-C-3 NON-PROFIT RESCUE: To see an animal, you must fill out an application first and then once approved, we can set up for you to meet the animal you are interested in. Here is the Dog Application that you can copy and paste into a browser: https://fs17.formsite.com/waverlypetrescue/form028182466/index.html Xena's owner in Denver, Iowa abandoned her when they fled town. Waverly Pet Rescue took her in and she is living in a foster home. Xena is now up to date on shots, heartworm negative, and spayed. We think Xena is a Pyredoodle which is a Poodle / Great Pyrenees mix. Xena was a year old in March 2024. She weighs about 45 pounds. It took her 24 hours to settle into her foster home. She is house trained. Mostly crate trained as well. She takes some treat incentives to go into the crate but once she is in, she knows that’s her room and settles down right away. She is a puppy at heart so working on some manners and helping her know her size compared to the other smaller dogs in the house. She loves to run and play with the other dogs. She gets a little stressed in the car but doesn’t last too long once in the road. She is potty trained. We’ve taught her how to use a doggie door which she loves since she’s able to come and go as she pleases. She does like having other dogs around. Doesn’t seem mind whether it’s a boy or girl just so they play with her. She is very sweet and needs someone who’s patient and can teach her normal manners like not jumping up and walking on a leash. She is skittishly around strangers and larger groups. She is jumpy around little kids, under 5 when they move quickly. She is incredibly sweet and loves attention. Xena needs a fenced in yard to keep her safe so this fence is required. Xena LOVES to sit out side and watch the birds. 5/30/24 UPDATE: Xena is such a tender hearted dog. She loves to be outside and watch her bird friends fly around. She will play there for hours if you let her just watching the birds. We have a bird feeder and bath in our backyard. She is crate trained and doggie door trained. She eats well and love to give and receive petting, especially around her ears. She is still young so still working on her manners. She does like to put her left paw up to your arm and sometimes your face when you stop petting her. Never hard, but sometimes she forgets her size and gets exited. She really is a great girl. Xena does have a sister named Purdy listed on here if anyone would like to adopt both dogs. If they were totally bonded and missing each other when separated like what happens with some dogs, we would keep them together. It is not required because each dog would be completely ok without the other. Will someone please adopt Xena and give her a forever home? $300.00 adoption fee. WE ARE A NO-KILL 501-C-3 NON-PROFIT RESCUE. All donations are tax deductible. We do not have a shelter. All pets live in foster homes. We only adopt to indoor homes. To see an animal, you must fill out an application first and then once approved, we can set up for you to meet the animal you are interested in. We do background checks on all applicants. If you have assault, domestic abuse, or drug charges please do not apply. If you have questions, please send an email to [email protected] All animals see a vet for shots and normal exams. If they appear healthy and there are no obvious health concerns, then extensive testing is not done. This is normal procedure for pet rescues and shelters. Waverly Pet Rescue puts a lot of money into medical care for each dog and cat we take in. $350 is the average cost for basic care. This does not include if the animal had an injury, required extra flea / ear mite treatments, or needed extra days at the vet office.
