My Story

Xena ACCT-A-169944 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Xena must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by Saturday, August 3rd at 10 A.M. Should Xena's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Xena is an absolutely beautiful female German Shepherd who was brought to the shelter by the police on July 25th after responding to complaints regarding a dog locked in the rear of a property. After getting in touch with her owner, they decided to surrender her to the shelter. The officers speculated that she was being kept outside and noted that she was emaciated. They remarked that she was "wonderful, gave them no issues, and despite her condition was a "strong puller. With the proper guidance, this lovely lady will be a shining star! She knows sit and is eager to please especially when treats are involved. Due to some eagerness to eat treats, she would do best in a home with kids 10 and older. She is unfortunately very stressed in the shelter and is not the biggest fan of her kennel. She is exhibiting signs of high stress including panting, pacing, fence fighting with other dogs, spinning, excessively barking, and will attempt to mouth/nip at her handler's feet when being returned to kennel. To prevent further behavioral decline, she is seeking urgent placement with a rescue or adopter that can provide her with ample decompression time and a safe place to stay. Xena is looking for that special person to provide her with a loving home, a place where she can rest her pretty head, be rewarded with treats, and given lots of love! She may not have had the best past, but is ready to put her best paw forward! Behavior Notes: Per volunteer 7/31/24: Per note on whiteboard "Will try to bite your feet going back inside" Per volunteer 7/26/24: Xena presented to the front of kennel and did some leash dodging. Once leashed she pulled moderately through the kennels. Once outside she peed. She would bark when seeing dogs at a distance. She showed positive interest in approaching another dog named Ninja. She politely sniffed him and then shied away when he tried to sniff her. Xena did well in the presence of Ninja and walked together nicely. Xena zig zags when walking on leash. Xena did well meeting Tin. She sniffed him appropriately and would veer away if he attempted to sniff her. Overall she did well and seems to prefer to be the one to approach other dogs rather than be approached. She allowed all over handling and knows sit. She expressed interest in toys but did not play with them. She was easily returned to kennel. Per staff on 7/26/24: 10+ snatches food Per staff on 7/26/24: When we got to the room Xena paced around anxiously, looking for treats. When she smelled the treats nothing else mattered to her, she just wanted food! I gave her some treats and she was understandably pretty snatchy, but didn't catch my fingers. She allowed some all over handling after some treats, but was pretty focused on finding more. I got her to focus on a tennis ball instead and she had a blast chasing it around! She traded easily for treats as well! Overall, Xena is a sweet shepard that is so treat motivated! I;m sure she'd be an easy girl to train with how food motivated she is! SHe did not show signs of resource guarding either, and let me pet her and put my hand near a pile of treats she was gobbling up! Per staff 7/25/24: A very good girl with a lot to say! Barked a bit in the lobby, but sat nicely for treats. Has a lot of energy as well, but is wonderful despite her situation Medical Notes: 8/1/24: This dog has been observed to have shelter acquired upper respiratory infection (URI), or a "doggy cold". They have been started on medication, and will be monitored for resolution of the respiratory infection. 7/26/24: Eyes - goopy Ears - nsf Nose - nsf Mouth/Teeth/Gums - mod staining Coat & Skin - fleas found Urogenital - f/i Gait/Mobility - no lameness Attitude: bar, friendly Videos: Ninja and Xena: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1rKlR-nav0 Tin and Xena: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lu6kM7UYRc Xena sits for a treat https://youtube.com/shorts/lmz1YFQ9Y3M?feature=share Xena knows sit: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/mxqDCQORFmU Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
