My Story

DOB: 2011 Arrival: January 2013 History: Winston was pulled from a high kill shelter when his time was up. 47lbs Red and white and velvet to touch! And those ears beautifully frame his expressive face! We wonder, could this guy be any better looking?  Winston’s beauty goes way beyond his physical body – just ask the staff and volunteers out at the sanctuary, and they will tell you he is as sweet as they come. Winston’s path through life has not been an easy one to be sure.  CFC stepped up to offer a safe haven for Winston when he found his time was up in a high-kill shelter. He had treatment for heartworms and, upon arrival, needed several meals a day to put on some much needed weight.  While Winston loves interacting with other dogs, he is a bit shy when first meeting humans (some of us can be kind of scary sometimes!); but with all the attention and loving he gets at CFC, Winston has made great strides in gaining confidence. Life with a hound offers some of the most pleasant and joyful interactions you can get from an animal, and these dogs are as a rule especially resourceful, sometimes crafty, and often have a sense of humor. Check out Winston or one of his friends in the sanctuary! A Word from Winston “My name is Winston, and folks will tell you I am as sweet as they come. They might also tell you that I can be a bit shy when we first meet, but I am making mighty strides in gaining confidence around folks. CFC has taught me that folks only want to love on me. They tell me I am extremely handsome and very distinguished looking. After all, I am on my third girlfriend (the other two got adopted!) Volunteers I am attached to are greeted with wiggles and jiggles of delight! Even though I have been here for eight years; however, I am still skittish with people I do not know. I love other dogs, and hanging out with them gives me a great sense of security and comradery. Get me into a large arena where I can run, and stand back! I am beauty in motion - my ears fly back and my long legs carry me at breakneck speed! I love playing with toys, too.” What Winston Needs in His Home – Winston needs a very dedicated owner with a lot of extra time at first, because he would need multiple visits at the sanctuary to become accustomed to a new person. Then he would need a stable, routine schedule with lots of love and understanding once home. Even though he has been here for eight years, he is still skittish with people he doesn’t know. He might go off his feed for a while until he knows he can trust you. But then, you will have a dedicated friend! Winter 2024 Update: "Even in my golden years, I can't tell you how rewarding it is to be needed and wanted. As you know, I am the go to guy to help mold and develop pups to be good canine citizens. I hear we have a new litter of 7 that soon I will be working with. YES!! In the meantime, I have a full time roommate Walle who is a bit of a project doggie so he keeps me on my toes as I do my best to reassure him and guide him to pet excellence. It's no fun to just work, work so on weekends, it's not unusual for Volunteer Angela to match me up with Leah for a playdate. She is just my style...fast and sleek, playful and friendly. We've been good friends for some time now and she always helps to reset me and bring out the best in me. I'm still very healthy and with plenty of pending work on the table for me, I'm going to be busy this winter and spring giving guidance to other dogs." Fall 2023 update: "He's just a wonderful dog and working hard daily to better the lives of pets under our care," as quoted by a staff member who routinely works with our dear, dear friend Winston. Winston is in good health and puts in full days. He still has roomie Wille the hound who is a complex, quirky guy under his wing. Winston is trying so very hard to help normalize and settle him in. When not working on project pet Walle, Winston has been recently assigned another super, super shy and overwhelmed dog, Lando to help move him along. Winston knows this could be his biggest challenge yet, but he's up for the task. When not trying to heal other dogs, we make sure he goes on playdates with well balanced doggies like newer arrival, Scooby. What a joy it is to see the two of them equally as smitten with the other as they run and goof off and play a heated gate of pet tag! We adore Winston and can't wait to see what miracle of healing he might bring to one of our pets. You go big guy! New Video May 2018: https://youtu.be/wCJTj-BgJc4
