My Story

Wilhelmina is officially available for adoption! If you don’t know who Wilhelmina is, she’s the underweight nekkid pink molerat found dumped on the side of a road in Lake Worth who I, then, pulled from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control at the end of February after having to let my Wilbur cross the rainbow bridge a few days prior. She was saved and named in his honor. Ok, so she’s not technically a molerat, but she looked like one from barely having any hair due to noncontagious demodex mange, exposed skin being pink, ribs and hips being prominent, and being little. For the first time in LARC’s 10 year history, we spent $258 to purchase an Embark bundle that included a DNA test and an age test. Originally, at the shelter, she was thought to be 4 - 6 months old. When we picked her up from the shelter, we were told she was 4 - 6 years old. With such a big discrepancy, we decided to wait until she regrew some hair and looked a bit better to have a doctor from our vet’s office give their opinion and we’d split the difference. Well, that left us even more confused because we were told she could be 6 months - 7 years old. Not having any clue as to how old she could be, her size and physical features only added to the confusion as to what breed/mix she was. Was she an older small breed/mix? Was she a younger medium - large breed/mix? The only way to find out was to DNA and age test her, so we knew how to properly promote her for adoption. WE WERE ALL SURPRISED BY THE RESULTS!! Wilhelmina was swabbed and tests sent back to Embark toward the end of April. On May 14th, we found out she was a pure bred American Bully. On May 20th, we found out she was 7 months old with an estimated birthday of September 24, 2023. Embark calculates a dog’s birthday based on the swab date (April) not the date that the test is run (May), so she was just shy of 8 months old when her birthday was calculated. That means as of today, July 1st, Wilhelmina is 9 months old. WILHELMINA IS A 9 MONTH OLD AMERICAN BULLY!! She’s UTD on shots, spayed, and microchipped. Wilhelmina’s foster moms call her “Mina” and she does respond to her name. She is said to be the “sweetest little cuddle bug ever.” They have taught her how to sit and give paw. Mina is pretty good on a leash, but if she sees another person or dog she seems to get really excited and pulls. She’s crate trained and has no issues when her foster family leaves. She’s pretty much potty trained, but seems to have some pee pee accidents when she drinks too much water. She uses a pee pad, but at her age, that needs to be phased out. She will go by the door usually if she needs to go to bathroom. She really doesn’t bark, just once in a while. Wilhelmina is big and small dog friendly. She is kid friendly. Cats unknown. Sweetheart, Mina, was literally abandoned in horrible condition and she’s so lucky one of her foster moms found her. She has received medical care and has known love for the past few months and now it’s her turn to find a forever family who will continue to love and keep her safe.
