This beautiful senior gal made her way to rescue a few months ago, and has some pretty significant medical updates.
When Uma came to us, she was found to have a severe urinary tract infection, seemed to be deaf, had Ehrlichia (a tick borne infection), and is missing several teeth. She also has a large mass on her leg.
After several rounds of antibiotics, Miss Uma seemed to be feeling much better, especially with added on anti-inflammatories and pain medication. She started acting happier, brighter, and has been loving life on the farm with her foster family!
Unfortunately, just a few days before her scheduled mass removal, a follow up urine analysis and culture made our vet team very suspicious of something much more sinister than a UTI. And recently, our follow up testing confirmed our worst fears: Uma has bladder cancer.
While we knew Uma was a senior girl, her ongoing UTIs made us very suspicious that she had had this mass on her bladder for quite some time. Unfortunately, the prognosis for transitional cell carcinoma is around 6-12 months, and we are not certain how long she has already had it.
Fortunately, her vet team is hopeful that we can keep her comfortable for whatever time she has left with long-term antibiotic usage, chemotherapeutic-adjacent anti-inflammatories, and continued pain management. Right now, we are evaluating Uma day-by-day, and she is doing well with her current medication regimen.
Ultimately, we have decided Miss Uma will live the rest of her days as a hospice foster with her wonderful foster family. However, Uma will have tremendous medical costs going forward to continue keeping her feeling good. If you’d like to help sponsor her medical bills, that would also be greatly appreciated!
