NOTE: Tom Tom is not currently with Almost Home -- we are crossposting him in an effort to spread the word about this sweet older gentleman! Please e-mail us for more information!
The shelter's no place for any dog, but it's REALLY no place for this gentle old boy! Poor Tom Tom was picked up as a stray on the streets of Philadelphia, and even though he was wearing a collar and rabies tags, his friends at the shelter were unable to track down his owner. He's been at the ACCT shelter for nearly a month now ... and Tom is running out of time :-(
Although his photo doesn't do him justice -- he is in badly need of a bath, haircut and some tender loving care -- you can see that Tom Tom is a classic, adorable, shaggy little dog. He immediately became a favorite of the shelter volunteers, and they're doing their best to find him a real home ... but most adopters seem to want the cute little puppies and healthy young adults. Sadly, the older dogs -- who often make the very best companions! -- are usually overlooked.
Like the rest of us who are getting up there in years, Tom has a few minor health issues: He has arthritis, and doesn't do too well on stairs, so a home where he could stay on one level would be ideal. He also has a few fatty tumors, but they don't seem to bother him, and they certainly don't make him any less lovable! (Besides, he keeps them discreetly hidden under that shaggy coat of his :-)
Tom Tom recently paid a visit to the shelter doctors for neutering, teeth-cleaning, bloodwork and a general check-up. He came through it all just fine, and even his bloodwork was normal. The vets sent his off with a prescription for something to help with his arthritis, which put quite a bit more pep in Tom Tom's step!
The vets estimate that Tom Tom is about 10-12 years old, which certainly qualifies him for senior status ... but because he's on the smaller side, he probably has quite a few years left to enjoy the best that life can offer. Besides, as Tom Tom says, "In dog years, 10 is the new 8!"
If you have a soft spot for the sweet old fellows, or if you're a slow-mover looking for a companion to match your speed, please consider Tom Tom! He doesn't need much: just a soft bed, good food to keep him healthy, and the joy of finally having someone special to love again -- could it be you? Please
e-mail us for more information on fostering or adopting this very special senior!
