Toby's story is a heartbreaking one. Someone hit him in the head with a baseball bat, and when his rescuers arrived to help, he was found cowering in the basement. It's difficult for us to process the notion of such profound suffering so you can only imagine how hard it must be for Toby. What we know about Toby is that he takes some time to trust humans, and sometimes in new environments he has moments of pure panic, desperate to get back to his safe place. Can you really blame him? What we also know about Toby is that once he warms up to you, he will cover you in kisses, show off his very good manners for treats and will ask you to play with him. It's why he is a fan favorite at the shelter. When you meet Toby for the first time, he won't be the dog that runs up to you, wagging his whole body in excitement. He'll appear aloof, staying close to the people he knows or ignore you to sniff around and play with his toys. This may be one of the reasons he has been passed over by potential adopters time and time again. As Toby approaches one full year at the shelter, we are renewing our commitment to finding him his place in the world and a home with a family who will go slowly with him and allow him to build relationships at his own pace. Trust us, he will get there! He would also benefit from a fenced-in yard where he can explore the outdoors while feeling safe. As Toby moves through adolescence into adulthood, trauma has once again raised its ugly head, as it often does at this age. For Toby that means walks can be scary. He can be fine one moment and then panic, bolting for home. For this reason, he may not be a great candidate for a family who wants to bring their dog on lots of walks or hikes, at least not yet. He would love to lounge in the house with you, play with enrichment toys, go for car rides (Toby is good in the car and enjoys it), and run around in a secure yard. Are you the family for Toby?
