My Story

Sweet Pea is a beautiful brindle whippet/pit bull mixed-breed dog who is spayed, microchipped, up-to-date on shots and quite healthy. She is now on flea and heartworm preventative, as is Illinois Humane’s custom with all of its dogs. Sweet Pea was adopted as an older puppy in 2004, returned when the kids grew tired of her and then adopted out by another organization to a person who has always had cats. Sweet Pea, given that she has both sight hound and terrier in her background, soon found that she loved to chase (and frequently catch) squirrels, rabbits, opossums in her new yard. The cat of the family soon found it was a target of her prey drive, too, so the woman returned her. She was taken to animal control, where the Illinois Humane volunteer who had originally rescued her found herself rescuing her again. Since originally adopted in 2004, Sweet Pea has put on a bit of weight, but her foster family is working on getting her back her back to her svelte self again. Upon intake, she weighs about 43 pounds. She is housebroken and crate-trained. Sweet Pea has lived with children in both of her previous homes, and she loves people of all kinds. She should not be in a home that has small animals or where she can be allowed to kill small wildlife. To visit with Sweet Pea, please join us at our off-site adoptions at PetCo, 2721 S. Veterans Parkway, Springfield, Ill., on the first and fourth Sundays of each month or the second and third Sundays at Springfield’s PetsMart on Veterans Parkway. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. If that doesn't match your schedule, please call Illinois Humane at (217) 698-3804 to arrange for a visit with Sweet Pea. She is waiting to meet you. ILLINOIS HUMANE . . .
