My Story
Splash, born August 27, 2021 and estimated to be about 10 pounds, originated with a Canadian backyard breeder living with up to 200 dogs. Authorities got involved and began moving the dogs out of the home and also giving the breeder the opportunity to send to rescue.
The breeder was breeding Pomeranians and Shelties, so presumably, Splash is a mix of both, a mutt known as a Poshie in the breeding world.
Mattie's Place has taken 19 dogs from this situation since March 2024. All have been adopted except for 6 dogs. These 5 new welcomes plus 1 remaining, Nelson, from March.
They are all good dogs. They have just been wronged by humans, breeding for profit and never had an opportunity to learn basic skills like housetraining/leash skills/respectful socialization/confidence outside the home they spent their life in etc.
Splash has been the most challenging of all the dogs. She is incredibly fearful of new people and things. She will need an adopter that is full of compassion and understanding with a boatload of patience and kindness to help Splash understand she's safe.
It took about 1 week for her foster Mom to get to see her fun personality, where she'll do little dances for attention and come over to share space when her foster Mom is watching tv. It took about 1 week for her to allow pets but pets are on Splash's terms not her humans.
Splash needs an adopter that has a quiet home without a lot of coming and goings. An adopter that loves taking on a challenging dog and working to gain their trust in baby steps. An adopter that has dog experience and the commitment level needed to welcome a dog like Splash and help her to overcome her fear and be the very best version of herself.
You must be willing to work with housetraining and leash training and confidence building and just helping this dog to learn how to be a companion pet. Most of the others were adopted by their fosters, so that goes to show how amazing these dogs really are; they just need patience to guide them through.
Splash goes for all needed vetting on August 15th and I'll update this profile with the exact weight and the outcome of vetting and surgical needs. Spays/neuters will be completed. Full vaccines. Deworming. Parasite prevention administered. Dentals if grade 3 or higher (or at my vets discretion if bordering grade 2/3 dental disease). They were all groomed July 24th and did well for a 1st time groom.
Splash needs a home with a fenced in backyard as she's too fearful to be a condo dog.
Not cat tested, but the dog is small enough that a dog savvy cat should be just fine sharing the space. Another well natured dog of equivalent size would be fine but preference will be given to no dog homes as I think that would make these dogs happiest given their previous living conditions.
To adopt one of these dogs means work and commitment, but you'll be rewarded with a lifetime of canine companionship in return.
Splash saw our groomer on arrival. She was brushed out and then bathed, but became so terrified with the blowdryer, we had to cut the groom short. She has since been brushed out again, but will need a groomer post-adoption that understands fearful dogs.
Everything for Splash is a 1st so introductions to everything in life needs to be slow and methodical.
Splash is in foster care with 2 other well behaved dogs. She's doing fine with them, but is probably best to be the only dog so she can have all the focus she needs.
Splash is actually a really good dog. I love dogs like Splash. Being given an opportunity to really earn a dog's trust and build that bond is so rewarding. Project dogs are not for the faint of heart, but once that dog trusts you, they truly become the greatest of lifetime companions.
ONCE SAID: “Nothing that’s worthwhile is ever easy. Remember that.”
TO NOTE FOR THOSE THAT WILL BE WATCHING HER PROFILE:
Splash's adoption fee is currently $99 as her adopter will need to put quite a bit of training into her. As the weeks and months pass, should she not be adopted, and she begins settle in as a companion pet with her time spent under Mattie's Place, her adoption fee will be raised to our standard adoption fee of $875 when less work is required post-adoption.
