If greatness of heart and spirit are the measure of a good dog, Sparky exceeds all standards.
LIttle is known of Sparky's history - he was born before our group was even formed. He most recently passed into the hands of a young girl who became aware that his owners found him inconvenient, and intended to put him down. Although she herself did not have the resources to care for him, she brought Sparky home with her, and then began an effort to find a rescue who would take him.
The simple dignity of her request brooked no question of the value of the life of an old, blind dog. And her faith in that truth is a reflection of the goodness of the dog she offered.
Indeed, the dog we met is not a dog one feels sorry for. He is a dog one notices, and deeply admires. He belies his age by his carriage, his movement, his bearing, and his honest, responsive, curious nature.
Sparky is a grand, and handsome dog. He is quiet and intelligent. He cocks his head and listens carefully to the source of sound, and then focuses his face, so that if you did not know he can't see, you would think he can. He always appears to be looking right at you. His eyes are perfect in shape and appearance, and his expression is open and keenly interested.
In motion, Sparky steps out with a fluid prancing of his forelegs. He is easy to walk on lead, and sensitive to deft, low-pressure squeezes on a lead, similar to the quiet hands one uses on the reins of a bridle. He walks along confidently, occasionally bumping into things, and then adjusting, but there is nothing more pleasurable to him than the prospect of a good walk.
Sparky is extremely responsive; he meets new people calmly and with a gentlemanly demeanor. He is gentle, undemanding and mannered. Most touching have been his acceptance and stability - he has endured so many changes with forbearance and cooperation - we have no doubt that courage and faith have kept him going for so long. Although we do not recognize that Sparky ever received any formal training, he is instinctively a team worker, and seems to intuit almost any direction that is given positively and consistently.
Many dogs begin their lives at the point that someone gives them a voice and a chance to be seen. We realize that there are not a multitude of adopters looking for a dog like Sparky. But all he needs is one. We hope that his faith, and the faith of the young girl who saved his life, will guide him home.
