My Story

UPDATE 3/12/08: Missy continues to do well in foster care. Today she met a horse for the first time, and she wasn't scared, just curious. She's getting along great with cats and dogs, and she seems very respectful of her foster family's 6 month old twins. She hasn't even tried to steal their toys! Of course, she has plenty of toys of her own!

Missy is still slightly underweight, but her foster mom is trying to fatten her up a bit. They've been working on some basic obedience training, too. Missy has already learned to sit on command.

Missy is happy, friendly, and eager to say hello to everyone she meets. If you meet her, you're pretty much guaranteed to fall in love!

UPDATE 3/9/08: Missy's foster mom reports that Missy is having a blast playing with her foster family's resident dog and cat. She doesn't seem to mind at all when the larger dog bowls her over. She's full of puppy enthusiasm, and she's still a baby. When she gets tired, she drops wherever she happens to be for a nap. When she's mellow, she's really mellow.

Missy isn't a big fan of her crate. She'll go in for a high value treat, but it's not her favorite thing. She will follow another dog in without hesitation.

She's working on "sit," and learning not to jump up on people, but she is a puppy, so this will take some practice and reinforcement.

UPDATE 3/5/08: Missy, formerly Sidra, is full of puppy personality and is stealing hearts everywhere she goes. It's nearly impossible to meet this beautiful girl and not fall in love.

Missy loves to explore and try new things. Yesterday she mastered the stairs, and now she follows her foster mom up and down them eagerly. She's very curious and seems very smart. She's learned to sit on command already.

Missy is living with a dog and a cat in her foster home. The cat is closer to her size and for now, seems to be Missy's first choice of play mate. She has been very affectionate and super-friendly with all the people she has met.

Missy is a typical puppy in that she loves to run and play but when she runs out of steam, she wants to crash on a nice warm lap and snuggle.

Missy is about 5 1/2 months old and weighs 22 pounds. She's still growing.

Sidra has been renamed Missy!!! Sigra just did not seem to fit her. She is a sweet, cuddly, friendly, fun little puppy who will become a wonderful family member! She has already stolen the hearts of her foster family! If you are interested, and have given a LOT of thought to what having a very young puppy entails, please send in an application!

3/1/08 Sidra and Signa are in foster care in New england! Stay tuned for updates!

Sidra and her littermate Signa were surrendered to the shelter on 01/16/2008. Sidra is the smaller of the two, appx 5 months old as of 2/13/08 and weighs between 12 to 15 pounds. Sidra is black in color with just a hint of white on her chest. We do not know the history of these pups, they were abandoned at the shelter. These pups are very playful and very healthy. Please help us find them a home.

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $250.00 for altered dogs. $350. for unaltered puppies, with $100 refundable after spay/neuter. All Senior dogs 6 years or older have a reduced adoption fee of $200. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter and transport from Arkansas to Maine on a USDA approved transport with a Health Certificate. All dogs are quarantined 14 days prior to leaving Arkansas. All dogs will be tested for Heartworm prior to adoption. Almost Home Rescue will process your adoption.
