My Story

Foster Update 10-28-08: Shortie is a fun loving dog that enjoys affection and aims to please his family with his loyalty. Shortie is always up for long walks and adventures and is an explorer at heart. He is an excellent camper, hiker and very playful with dogs if he is not threatened by them. He loves relaxing in the sun outside or cuddling up with his blanket inside. He is fully house trained and makes is known when he needs to go out to use the restroom. Although he is not particularly good with cats, he is very intelligent and a fast learner. He has the definite potential to be taught to get along with them. He is currently learning to not charge cats while on the leash, but cannot be trusted with them off the leash. Shortie is strong and muscular and therefore needs plenty of daily exercise. He is a great running partner and would be happiest in a home with a big yard to play in while people are away. With his gentile affection towards kids and adults alike, he would make a wonderful addition to any family. Shortie was at the Payson Humane Society Shelter without any real lookers, and they were becoming very worried about him. They felt he was a victim of "Black Dog Syndrome" (many black dogs don't get adopted just because of their color), and was becoming very depressed. They posted an ad on craigslist and one of the Flagstaff volunteers saw it and just was moved by poor Shortie. Flagstaff volunteers arranged transport and Shortie arrived in Flagstaff on 7/16. He is a handsome 2-year old Dutch Shepherd mix (info at http://www.dutchshepherdrescue.org/aboutDS.html) with no real reason other then coat color why he hasn't found his furever home. Shortie is an active dog that requires both mental and physical exercise. He is a wonderful walker on leash and minds well. He is very loving but needs an outlet for his energy. Shortie lived in a quiet adult home where he was allowed to sleep indoors. He's fine with kids (prefer 10 & older), but like most dogs he will chase after squirrels, cats and deer. He also rides politely in the car. He may have great potential as an agility dog because he can clear fences in a single bound (6 ft fence recommended). He will do well with a family that can take him with them wherever they go or leave him in the house when they are gone. His yard will need to be safe, secure and large enough for him to play in. Please fill out an online application to meet Shortie. He will be joining our gang every Saturday at the Flagstaff Petsmart from 12-3.
