Sassy, our 9 year old 11 pound chihuahua mix, knows what she wants. Generally, all she wants are belly rubs, cuddles and snacks, so it isn't too much to ask. Sassy came to us after having been found stray locally. Since we are the go-to rescue for rotten teeth, the shelter reached out to us to help with her dental disease. We had to do over 30 extractions! Understandably, Sassy feels like a new dog and she can eat much better than she could before.
Her foster family describes Sassy as "the easiest dog we've had!". She is very friendly, crate trained, quiet when left alone (after some quick complaints), and potty trained. Sassy will chat at her foster family to let them know she needs something - a massage, a trip to the yard, a cookie. Sassy loves going on walks and playing outside. She does struggle with her bossiness on a leash. Sassy does not like seeing other dogs when she's on a walk and barks to let them know. For that reason, a low traffic neighborhood and a yard for bathroom breaks would be ideal. Although other dogs on the sidewalk are a firm no-thank-you for Sassy, she's good friends with the other small dogs in her foster home and is playful with them. We have not seen Sassy around cats.
Sassy has an angular limb deformity. In her case, this means that her shin bones are curved like a subtle "C". The deformity causes her kneecaps to slip and makes her skip when she walks; this could lead to arthritis in her senior years. Currently, Sassy is comfortable and doesn't let the deformation slow her down. Her adopter will want to keep her in good shape.
Sassy is heartworm negative and current on her flea and heartworm preventatives.
Knowing what you want and advocating for yourself is an admirable quality. Let's stop calling it "bossy" and just start calling it "channeling my Sassy". Apply to adopt at www.stumptownstrays.org
