My Story

This is Sanjaya: He is a sweetheart. I smoke & I was in the garage this summer smoking a cigarette (b/c I don't smoke in the house) and I had the garage door up - it was early in the morning - and I looked out front and there was this ratty little mess of a fur ball just walking down the sidewalk by himself. I walked out and as soon as he saw me he came and ran up to me. We had him professionally groomed that day b/c his hair was disgusting and I had no experience with Pomeranians - so brushing it myself was not an option. I put up signs all around our subdivision, posted him on Craigslist and Petfinder and had him scanned for a chip at our vet. No one ever responded and after we had him groomed we took a closer look at things down stairs and saw that he was not only not fixed, but that 1 of his testicles had never dropped and he had this yellow stuff coming out of his penis. We also noticed that his breath smelled unnaturally bad and he had this 1 tooth on the bottom that was sticking out with this hard, yellow stuff around the base of it at the gum. So, after no replies to our signs and postings, we scheduled to have him fixed and have his teeth cleaned. The vet neutered him and, in the process, removed the impacted testicle and she said the tumors were beginning to form around it - apparently it should have been removed a long time ago - and when she cleaned his teeth she said he was already missing most from decay and she ended up pulling what was left - all but 3. We expected the snaggle tooth on the bottom with the yellow stuff to get pulled, but it did not - she said the tooth itself was fine, but had probably moved from decay - she cleaned off the (I think she said tartar) build up and now he just has a snaggle tooth, which we think makes him more endearing! :-) He was put on an antibiotic for the yellow stuff and it cleared up - but did come back briefly this summer and then cleared itself up. Not long after having him, we realized he was 100% deaf - though at times I am positive he's faking b/c I swear he hears me immitating him when he's humming at me while I cut up his food - I'll show you what I mean in person, it's hard to explain. He's a sweet dog - loves to cuddle and will even play with us when he's in the mood. He has a little bed in our closet and probably spends 80% of his day in there. He's very easy and is much older - which probably explains the sleeping. I forget how old the vet said - but I know it was at least 8-10 years old. He will also be brough UTD on shots either 12/20 or the 1st Sat. in December. I don't know if he was used for breeding or just not taken very good care of - but which ever it was, no owners have ever shown up - which surprised us, given his breed. It's not so surprising when people dump labs or especially lab or pit mixes out here - which happens more often that we ever realized before moving to Celina - but the fact that he is a Pomeranian and no one claimed him really surprised us. We've had him since July and have put off looking for a home primarily b/c we do this a lot - taking in strays and rehoming - DID it a whole lot last summer and had 2 of the adoptions turn out badly - enough to scare me away from wanting to go through the emotional stress of it again...but since the dogs keep showing up, we need to continue to find new homes - AND, it's not fair to our 2 dogs when we have a house full and they don't get the time and attention they deserve. Anyway - that's Sanjaya's story. Here are pics - the 1st one was from this summer, I have since given him a very mange-esque haircut - keeps him from peeing on his fur - I don't have any experience with Pomeranians, so we just took the clippers to him - he seems to like it.
