My Story

NOTE: Sammy is in a foster home. NOT at the shelter. A completed application is required before an appointment to meet her will be made. We do hope to have Sammy placed into her new home by July 28. LOCAL ADOPTION ONLY. Sorry.

Sammy is approximately 6 years old in these pictures taken June 23, 2007. Sammy does wonderful with ALL people. However, small children seem to be a bit intimidated by Sammy because they do not understand that she likes to sniff, snort, and play. Her snorting seems to scar them the most. She has been exposed to all ages of children and does well with all of them though. She so loves to snuggle!

Sammy LOVES riding in a car but it takes a little while for her to calm down. She SNORTS a lot in the car because she is excited. Sammy does pull when on a lease, but gradually calms down. She HAS to spend the majority of her time inside during the summer or she will overheat. Sammy is housetrained and never has accidents. She is also very smart and knows the commands ?bed? and will go to her bed and lie down and ?house? and will go to her crate and lay down.

Sammy IS A GREAT DOG. Her only behavior problem is not being able to live with other dogs. She becomes aggressive when excited and sharing space with other dogs. Oddly enough this very seldom takes place when inside. It seems to primarily be a problem when competing for attention outside. Sammy cannot be placed with other dogs or cats. Sammy has never been around cats, but can be aggressive with other dogs.

June 23, 2007 - UPDATE:
Sammy's owners hate to give her up but give this reason why they have to:
I have a unique and painful problem regarding our families English bulldog, Sammy (female - named Sammy after Sammy Sosa because she has a baseball diamond on her ear!). She is a wonderful pet, as long as you do not have any other pets. She has become aggressive toward our other dogs and though we have made extreme efforts to keep them segregated, it is not always possible. She has NEVER been aggressive toward any of us - but I fear one of us (including my children) is going to get bitten when trying to break up the fights (or just being in the proximity of the fight). The fights typically are with our much older (12 years old) mix breed larger dog and usually result in one of the dogs being injured (Sammy usually suffers the most injuries).

She is in her crate and will stay there until we find another option for Sammy. Our vet is firm in his opinion that Sammy should be euthanized and not given to another family - for fear she will be aggressive to their pets. I have been unable to find another home for Sammy - most families are too nervous about adopting a dog that has been aggressive toward other animals. They fear it will escalate.

NOTE: In a home where she is the ONLY pet, and home with an understanding owner, Sammy would be wonderful.

July 10, 2007 - UPDATE: Sammy is Heartworm negative and on preventatives. She weighed 60 pounds at the vet today.
