My Story

Reba was rescued from an Appalachian West Virginia pound, where she was only one of numerous beautiful small dogs hunched over, fearfully staring from the back of their small cages. And she was one of three dogs her foster mom rescued from this pound, along with several other dogs, within a 3-week period who tested positive for heartworms. (This fatal condition was not surprising since she was an owner give-up--with no legally mandating holding period--rather than a stray and probably had never been afforded even one trip to the vet in her short 2-year life.) All three dogs were immediately started on expensive, painful heartworm treatment, and one of them did not survive the treatment. Although the other two were not symptomatic, Reba had a continual cough which probably got on her owner's nerves and which can--but, fortunately, did not--mean that the heartworms are too heavy to be treatable. The cough disappeared with her first heartworm treatment 2/17-18/04. After her second treatment (3/16/04) and a negative reading on her heartworm filter test 3/30/04, Reba was spayed and vaccinated. She is a very submissive, quiet little girl and insists on sleeping with her human(s)--another thing which probably wasn't very popular with her Appalachian owner since she can single-handedly tangle and pile up all the sheets and blankets by moving around under the covers. (Frankly, her foster mom is not enjoying this either; but, because she is very agile, baby gates do not keep her out of any area. Therefore, her adoptive human would need to crate train her if that would be an issue with them.) Reba weighs only 16 lbs., but her long, slender legs make her 14 inches tall at the shoulder while she measures only 13 inches from the base of her neck to the base of her tail. Reba ignores cats. While she is fine with other dogs, she is basically frightened of most larger dogs. Her preference for companionship is humanKIND (or rather humanLOVE). Although Reba will not be ready to go to an adoptive home until mid-April, prospective adopter's applications will be reviewed meanwhile.
