My Story

Percy joined Mattie's Place from a Canadian shelter where he was shut down, growling, shaking, not socializing and the shelter staff couldn't handle him as he was a threat and bite risk. Percy is 7 pounds. We agreed to welcome him from the shelter and the moment he left that scary setting he blossomed into the sweetest of dogs. So full of love and appreciation. He was found as a stray, but he's very young, so we're giving him a DOB: July 25, 2023. His teeth are pearly white and he comes across as a very young puppy personality. He goes in for his neuter August 13th so if he's adopted prior to that date, you need to be willing to drop him to our veterinarian in Unionville at 8:00 am and pick him up post-op at 4:00 pm. As an unneutered male, he’s marking a bit in his foster home which is typical of unneutered males in a new home. He wore a belly band the first few days but seems to be on track now. But would potentially mark again post adoption as it takes a couple months for the hormones to dissipate and marking to subside. Percy is living in foster care with a small dog and cat and is doing just fine. He is not child tested. He can be a little weary with strangers, but he's only tiny at 7 pounds, so the world around him is an intimidating place, so understandably he has his hestiations. Percy is a great dog looking for a great adopter willing to put some further training into him to help round himself out into a lifelong companion pet. We're not seeing any behaviour concerns at all. He's a gem and was completely misunderstood in his shelter setting. FROM THE FOSTER: Percy arrived and right off the bat he was a happy, confident, exuberant boy. He absolutely loves to walk and is great on his harness and leash. He is a little bit of a squirmy puppy but is relatively easy to get the harness on. We go for three walks a day during the weekdays, sometimes more on off days; morning 30 mins around the neighbourhood, after work 30-40 mins or however long he wants on the nature trail, and a last pee walk around 11:00 pm for 10 mins or so around the courtyard. He likes to meet other small dogs and even some big dogs as long as they are calm. He is wary of strangers while on walks but does not react, just stays back. Percy seems to know how to use the elevator and is doing very well in an apartment setting. He is uninterested in my cat and doesn’t bother her. He loves to chase a small squeaky tennis ball. Not food motivated. He eats his kibble/canned food mix breakfast at around 8:00 am and same dinner at 6:30 pm. He is a soft, cuddly angel boy with the most beautiful eyes, wants to be held and snuggle into your neck. Expect many many face kisses and to give many soft fuzzy belly rubs! Percy sleeps in a crate in my bedroom at night. He puts up a fuss for a few minutes but then settles down and sleeps through the night. During the day he is free in my bedroom and likes to sleep on the bed. He doesn’t bark or whine and seems very content there for the day. Not destructive at all. This boy is an absolute gem and someone will be so very lucky to have him. ---------------------- To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in his current &/or previous setting.
