My Story

Norri ACCT-A-170078 is a 4-year-old female who came in as a stray on 7/28. Behavioral notes: Per staff 7/28: Adult only home preferred due to fear, 10+ Per staff during 7/28 behavior evaluation: KENNEL PRESENTATION: Norri was very nervous in kennel when I approached. SHe was curled up on her bed, facing the opposite direction. She looked up with wide, terrified eyes when I called her. I crouched down and put my leash in the kennel for her to sniff, but she did not come forward. I tried using a baby voice and I tossed some treats towards her. I could see that she was lightly trembling at this point, and very scared. She ate the ones that landed near her face, but did not move to take any other treats. I lowered the divider at this point, which scared her, and she scurried off the bed and came closer. She sniffed me nicely but was too nervous to put her head through my loop. She sat down and turned away from me with the lightest, most half hearted growl. I tossed the leash over her and she flinched hard when it touched her, but came right out once it was secured. LEASH SKILLS: Pulls minimally, quite fearful. HANDLING: In the room Norri stayed close to me, and leaned against my legs right away, seeking comfort. She allowed some slow, gentle body pets, and I talked to her in a calming voice. She tried to hide under the chair I was sitting on, but when she realized she couldn't fit, she tried to squeeze into the chair and hide behind me. I offered her some treats but she was over threshold at this point and too scared. She allowed all handling, but was trembling and avoidant throughout. When I stood up and walked around the room she followed me closely with a neutral body and tail, and whenever I would stop she would lean against me for comfort. I squeaked a squeaky toy and she perked up so much! She trotted across the room to me and sniffed it curiously. When I threw it she chased it and picked it up! She carried her toys to her favorite sitting spots, and kept them close. She allowed me to take her toys from in front of her with no issue. After some play she was less trembly, and much more neutral overall in the room. Overall, Norri is scared and stressed here, but remains sweet and seeks comfort in her handler. PLAY: Too scared to fully open up and play, but likes squeaky toys! TOYS: Loves squeaky toys! Rubber squeakies are her favorite, didn't like to chase stuffed squeaky toys. Medical notes: Per staff during a 7/27 intake exam: Norri had red eyes, slightly dirty ears, staining and tartar on teeth, broken lower right canine, growth on neck resembles skin tag, small dry patches on back and legs, larger patches on right hind leg and, dry elbows. Norri was noted to be bright, alert, responsive, very friendly and not quite food motivated. Videos: Chidori and Norri: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I7vg7SUDak
