My Story

Nigel - young (18 months) - Doberman Pinscher - male/neutered - black and tan short coat - 75 pounds

Nigel is a magnificently beautiful dog. Technically still a puppy, he came into rescue because his owner could no longer provide care for him, and despite his impressive appearance and lovely training, he is still quite vulnerable. It is obvious that his loss of relationship and home cost him dearly.

Nigel will bond deeply with his adopters. He looks to his caregiver for assurance and guidance, even to the extent that he wants confirmation that it is alright to eat his own meals. Nigel has a deep need to know that he is wanted, and to begin life in a home that can restore his sense of value.

Right now, however, Nigel is at a crossroads. His first experiences have made him nervous around men and children, and it will be the responsibility of his new humans to help him beyond these fears. Great sensitivity is one of the doberman characteristics that has earned the breed such a loyal following, but it also makes them emotional sponges -- they take their experiences, negative and positive -- very much to heart. Fortunately, though, dobies are very eager to please, and this timidity can be worked through with consistency and training.

Fluent in all basic commands, including "sit", "down", "stay", "paw", Nigel walks well on a lead. He is initially shy when he meets men, but warms up once he is certain of them. His response in situations in which he is unsure of himself is to sit closely by his caregiver, and look to her for instruction. This need for direction and reassurance is at touching odds with the arresting and pre-possessing impression that Nigel first makes.

Deep-chested, shiny, and athletic, Nigel has beautiful brown eyes. His eye contact is direct, open and searching. Even in repose, he is strikingly handsome. His movement style is fluid and proud. At play with his caregiver's dog, when he lets down his worries and becomes a gamboling puppy, he is still striking to watch.

Nigel is an attentive, sensitive and responsive dog for whom adoption will mean the world. His adopters' initial investment in building his confidence will be rewarded with great depth and devotion.
