My Story

Nellie has found her forever home with the Letourneaus in Pawtucket, RI

UPDATE 4/13/09: Nellie is being fostered in Walpole, MA. Please apply for this incredibly sweet girl now. She has now been in foster care for a week and she has come a long way. The only thing we are still working on is getting her not to jump up for affection. She doesn't do it a lot at this point, and when she does put her paws up, she is very gentle about it, but not everyone would appreciate her loving 'hugs' since she weighs 70 pounds. She is a gem of a dog though and in one week has made incredible progress with training!

Nellie was adopted out as a puppy last summer, but came back to the rescue due to still doing some very occasional puppy nipping (never breaking skin---just playing, with her mouth) at her ripe old age of 1 yr in a home with children under the age of 5. She unfortunately did not receive puppy training in her adoptive home-- but in just two days in her foster home she totally learned not to be at all mouthy, walks very nicely on leash, knows 'sit', 'come,' and will stay at the top of the stairs till foster mom gets to the bottom and calls her to come down. She is very smart, very obedient, and very submissive. She gets along great with the 5 other dogs in the foster household. This is an example of why we so emphasize the importance of training a puppy. We are always hesitant about adopting to families with children under 5-- and in order to approve such applicants, we have to be convinced and guaranteed that families will train their pups and dogs, and when that doesn't happen, all too often dogs end up in rescue again as they get older and larger. We would prefer a home for Nellie without very young children due to her size. She is a gentle, sweet, loving dog who likely will do great with children 10 or older and families who have had some dog experience. Her adoption fee is $350
