Merkel

Merkel is about 3 years old. When he was a small puppy, he was shot. The bullet landed very close to his spine, and he lost the use of his back legs. As he grew, his legs became hyper extended and could no longer bend. They stuck out to the side and were causing him mobility issues. Plus because they were hyper extended, they became a great risk of getting fractured. Because of his hyperextension, we decided along with orthopedic specialists, that removing his legs would be his best option. Merkel is now a double amputee. He did so well through his surgery and recovery. He now has a hind end cart so he can go for walks. Merkel is looking for an extremely special home. 1). No stairs 2). Easy and quick access to a yard for bathroom breaks 3). Someone who isn't gone for long periods of time, or a couple with overlapping schedules 4). Having another dog of similar size that likes to play but isn't aggressive in nature (not a priority). 5). No small children 6). Willing to allow rescue representative to do wellness checks twice a year. 7) located within the lower mainland only 8) someone who will take great care of Merkel's amputation site as it does touch the ground and could get cut up. Merkel is house broken but he tends to urinate more frequently than other dogs. We are unsure why this is and have done urinalysis to rule out infections. Merkel is healthy overall. Because he urinates more frequently than other dogs, he needs quick and easy access to a grassy yard/area. He also wears a belly band overnight to prevent accidents. Merkel needs a soft padded bed to stay as his space must have non slip mats. He doesn't really like slippery floors so carpet runners are important for his mobility inside the house. Merkel is very affectionate and loves attention. He also loves people. He can be a bit reactive to unknown dogs if they approach him quickly without warning, otherwise he is good with other dogs. Merkel needs protective covers for his hind end to prevent scraping his stumps and causing open wounds. We are still looking for a custom made cover for his hind end and will provide these to his future home. Plus he is getting his custom wheels made so he can go for longer walks Merkel is an amazing dog with a wonderful personality who is searching for an equally amazing and wonderful forever home His adoption fee is $695 He is fully vetted.
