Maynard

Maynard is a wonderful, sweet, 2-year-old 50# Australian Kelpie/Cattle dog Mixed breed dog. He is a herding breed that likes to herd by nipping at the ankles. This is a natural behavior that needs to be controlled by his forever home.

Maynard has not had a very good or fair start at life. He was given up to a shelter at 9 months old due to a divorce, but he also had lived in the garage with very little human interaction, so he was never taught that herding humans by nipping at the ankles was unacceptable behavior. He then spent the next year of his life at a shelter, where his herding instinct again went uncontrolled, so the problem did not get any better.

After only two sessions, Maynard learned that nipping at our ankles was unacceptable and he no longer does it with us. He is very intelligent and a joy to work with. In his Obedience training, he knows SIT, DOWN, HEEL, COME, STAY, STAND and WAIT. We've also taught him SHAKE and to CRAWL under a low table. He gets bored easily, so you need to keep his mind fresh.

It would be ideal if Maynard had a job to do--he obviously has a very intense natural instinct to herd. He is currently on a farm where he is being introduced to cattle, sheep and ducks.

Maynard gets along very well with other dogs, he is very playful. But, again, if he gets too rough, you need to intervene. He needs to learn to control himself or he doesn't get what he wants.

Maynard is housetrained and crate trained. He is a really sweet, relaxed dog who enjoys attention, if he's just being a dog. It's when he goes into "work" mode that he gets excited. Maynard also likes to play fetch.

Maynard is current on Rabies, Distemper & Bordetella vaccines, neutered, micochipped with the HomeAgain microchip, is heartworm tested and medicated while in our care, has completed a Basic Obedience Class and comes with a Gentle Leader.
