My Story

Max is an adorable, almost 4-year-old male Schnauzer who was found running the streets. Max was born on 2/12/2005, and he's hoping to spend his 4th birthday with his forever family!

Poor Max, he had a rabies tag on but we weren't able to find his family despite our best efforts. The vet who had issued the tag said that the owners' phone had been disconnected, and there was no forwarding address.

This gorgeous boy weighs approximately 20 to 25 pounds and is low to medium energy level, he's content to lounge around and enjoys a good walk or 2 a day. Max loves to cuddle, especially with people, and take a snooze when he needs a break -- a perfect snuggle bug! Max enjoys toys and will play occasionally but probably hasn't had much fun, as he's still learning all the joys of toys and balls. It seems as though Max is a pretty confident boy in new situations and has had some socialization somewhere along the way. He's also housetrained and rarely barks - he's a people pleaser for sure!

Max is excellent on a leash. He enjoys other doggie companions as well and enjoys playing with friends. Upon meeting an 8-year-old child, Max was cautious but gentle and seems to be a good candidate for a family with children.

When meeting new unknown friends, humans and dogs alike, Max is happy to give them tail wags and likes their attention - such a happy fellow!

Max was introduced to a cat in an outside environment and he turned away and ignored the feline - apparently deciding that canine companionship was more up his alley!

A Message from Max: "My perfect home would be one that had a sister or brother dog for me that liked to play. I have a blast running and playing with the dogs where I am now. Oh, and I'd love a family who allowed me to sleep with someone. That's the greatest thing ever. I would also greatly enjoy going for rides with my new family in the car. Long walks are great too. I am a little cautious when I first meet little people and do not know how to play with them, but I am friendly and gentle with them."

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $250.00 for altered dogs. $350. for unaltered puppies, with $100 refundable after spay/neuter.
