Donate Dober Duds
MARYAH. MARYAH. Maryah is a beautiful fawn female who is just over 1 year old. I think she's a pretty perfect dog, but like any young Dobe, not a good choice for a couch potato or someone who doesn't have the interest or time to devote to some daily exercise & quality time to his/her dog, or someone who is not able to provide structure, limits & training for a young working dog.
Maryah is wonderful with everyone she meets, very affectionate, friendly & confident. She's being fostered right now at a training/daycare center. (If we didn't all have many dogs, she'd be adopted by one of us!) We're helping her learn some self-control, manners and basic obedience. Maryah is very intelligent, picks up on things very quickly, takes direction very well & is eager to work with you. (She would be a wonderful choice for someone who would like to do agility or something with a dog.) We require that her new adopter take her through at least a basic class (hopefully more) in order to continue to facilitate the bond & communication with her.
While IDR doesn't require a fenced yard for all of our dogs, applicants with fenced yards (or who have a good, alternate exercise program like daycare) will be given preference for Maryah, since she is an energetic, young dog. Maryah loves toys & loves to play fetch. She loves to play in our supervised daycare, but probably would not do well in a free-for-all public dog park. She likes to run & play hard with other medium-larger dogs. (We believe that her prey drive is too strong to be safe around very small dogs or cats, ferrets, etc., especially if they are running.) Like most young Dobes, she still needs a few "time outs" when the play gets too wild in order to give her a chance to calm down.
Maryah would do best in a home with another medium or larger male dog. She would probably be fine with a med/large female, as long as the other dog is more submissive & low-key. While she's never been in a scuffle & does play with other females, living with another pushy, very assertive female would require a lot of supervision. She'd also be fine as an only dog, as long as her people would play with her.
Maryah has just a few bad habits . . . the biggie being the very dangerous desire to chase cars. We've seen much worse car chasers (Maryah is able to be distracted from barking at cars), but any dog who wants to chase large, moving vehicles can be in danger. We are working on this issue, but she probably wouldn't be the best dog for someone who lives downtown or on the lakefront in the city (while we haven't yet seen her do this, it's probably a good bet that she would want to chase bicycles & joggers also.) We tell all of our adopters NOT to let your adopted Dobe off leash outside of a fenced-in area since something bad could happen to them. However allowing Maryah to run free would almost certainly result in her death under the wheels of a car. So if you really cannot commit to keeping her inside of a fenced yard or walking her on leash, please do not apply for her since we are very fond of her. She can also get a bit "mouthy" (using your hand for a chewtoy--we are working on this) when she gets excited, so we will not place her with young children.
