My Story

Maizee was rescued from an Appalachian West Virginia pound, where her sad face and hairless left eye wrenched her foster mom's heart and made her one of 8 wonderful dogs she rescued from the pound on 3/11/04. On 3/16/04, Maizee weighed 56.3 lbs., and was estimated to be about 2 years of age. It was a toss up whether to classify Maizee as a purebred or mixed Golden Retriever since she "looks like, talks like, and chews bubble gum like" a purebred Golden; but, since her foster mom is not an expert on Goldens, she decided to go with the "mixed" designation to avoid misleading anyone just in case she is not purebred. Maizee stands just 23" tall at the top of her shoulder and measures 24" from the base of her neck to the base of her tail. She not only looks like a Golden, but she has the calm, laid back, sweet Golden personality. Maizee is very good around other dogs and cats, but probably would be fine as the only canine member of a family. In fact, she probably would be fine if her human family works days as long as she is safely secured inside the home. She appears to be completely housetrained; but, if she's not, it should not take long to finish her training. For bonding and safety's sake, obedience training is always recommended for any new addition to a family and definitely establishes a base of verbal communications. Maizee has been heartworm tested, started on heartworm preventative, vaccinated, and spayed. The did a skin scrap on Maizee just to make sure that her hairless area around the eye was not sarcoptic mange but skin allergy as she suspected. Sure enough, her hairless patch, as well as an ear infection (commonly associated with skin allergies/infections), were caused by allergies. The vet prescribed ear ointment, antibiotics, and antihistamine for her allergies. When her hair all grows back in around her eye, she'll be as good as new. This wonderful little lady just needs a wonderful permanent home to share her life and sweet memories for the next decade or so.
