One look at Lovey and we knew exactly what she was: a failure. We had guessed as much when a good Samaritan contacted us about the stray she had been taking care of, but it took no more than a split second for us to know exactly what we were dealing with: a useless hunting dog.
Like many other hunting dogs each year, Lovey was let go in the woods during her first hunting season when she proved to be a bad hunter. (It could have been worse, actually -- she could have been shot.) There are a lot of reasons why dogs aren't good hunters, but we have figured out in Lovey's case that she is a sweet daydreamer who wants only to be loved and allowed to happily ponder life's simple pleasures. In other words, she was no more suited to hunting than she would be to becoming a stockbroker.
It's interesting to note that although Lovey can appear to be miles away sometimes, she also has an ability to connect with humans instantly and profoundly on an almost spiritual level. It's a funny contradiction -- she's a dog who might not hear you for a few seconds when you are calling her to come inside, but who, once she saw you, would immediately understand that you had a bad day or a headache or needed to be distracted. Dogs with that ability are rare, and we remember every one we have ever met. We suspect that Lovey will make a similar impression on those lucky enough to meet her.
