UPDATE 3-5-10, from Lil Red! Hey all! How ya doin out there?! i just wanted my foster mom to give you all a little information about the type of home I'm looking for! While it's true I'm still just a young lass, I am very "mature" for my age! I am totally housebroke, yep! I can sleep all night long on a Costco cedar filled pet bed on the floor in my foster mom's bedroom, but hey, I DO sneak up on the bed when she's not looking! Shhhhhhh! Don't tell her, she doesn't like that! It's not fair tho, since she lets that cute little kiddo of her's, and that tiny Chihuahau friend of mine sleep up there! So, my ideal family would consist of a young couple with no children , or even a retired couple who's kiddo's have all grown and left the coop! I would like to have my parents all to myself for the next year or two, at least, so I can learn all there is to learn about being a good doggie so that when I grow up I will be an accepted member of society! I would like you to be home (no apt. or condos for me please! I LOVE the great outdoors!) owners with a LARGE securely fenced yard and a doggie door so I can come in and out as I please. I would REALLY like to have a Lab or similar type doggie brother or sister to romp and play with. This doggie would have to be around 1-3yrs old so he/she could keep up with my energy and antics. If not a doggie sibling, I would hope that you live close enough to a fenced in dog park that we could go there daily for an hour or two of romping and socializing. Foster mommy says I'm a social butterfly! I get along really well with big cats that like to play and snuggle too. I am in my "chewing" stage, so plenty of toys are a must! ***********************************************************************************************************************UPDATE 3-3-10. Eyes are all better!! Yay! Over $200 later! Whew! Even if you can't adopt her, maybe you'd be generous enough to send a donation our way to help cover her vet bills? Lil Red hound, as we call her, is the nicest pup ever! She's now completely housebroken, crate trained and socialized. She walks well on a leash. She has been farm raised with every sort of critter you can imagine and a sweet little kid. She is excellent with all. She has been taught NOT to bay, and you will thank me for this later, I promise. Now don't get me wrong, she will "alert" bay when somethings wrong or amis, but she's been discouraged from doing it just to hear the sound of her adorable voice, because, trust me on this, it's not adorable on a full size model and your neighbors will thank me for it! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~IN 1-17-10. Lil Red was an breeder/owner surrender. They had two pups in the litter turn out with "cherry" eyes and they couldn't afford to have them repaired. Lil Red is 4 months old at the time of this posting. She is half and half, but looks ALL Redbone. Both her parents were UKC papered, purebred dogs. They both are high ranking field trials champions, I was told. That means that Lil Red is probably going to do best in a home where her natural abilities are used for hunting, tracking or trailing. This could be man trailing as well, for search and rescue. She is HIGH energy, EXTREMELY smart and eager to please and learn. She does have an incredible nose already and can follow my scent out of the 100's acrossed the whole farm yard to find me. She has a set of lungs, I'm not going to lie, and when she's excited or displease, she let's loose with a blood-curdling bay that no neighbor will appreciate in the city. We had her eye surgery done, she's still a bit swollen, as you can see from the pictures, and that will all dissapate over time. She should be as good as new. I am looking for a specific type of home for this pup, and am going to be extremely picky about who I choose for her. I know what she's going to grow up to be like! **********************************************************************************************************************Coonhounds are SUPER cute when they are puppies. Hard to resist, but please do your homework! Coonhounds aren't for everyone and do best with people who understand them. While they can be mellow, laid back and easygoing, the are extremely tenacious hunters and can rarely be content as indoor, pampered lap dogs. Their gentle, friendly temperament suits them just fine to family life, but they do need an outlet for their need to "track, trail and bay". This can be a daily run with a jogger, or a nightly trial walk in the woods. It can also be quenched with a busy child or two and some fuzzy, squeeky dog toys in a large, secure backyard..... They must be taught at a young age to come when called. This is important for you to be able to call them back off the trail of any game they might jump on your daily walks, especially when you are lucky enough to be able to walk them in a safe area, off lead. It is illegal in most states to allow your Coonhound to run loose, or run wildlife and it is your responsibility to make sure that doesn't happen. Coonhounds also have very deep, loud voices and will use them if left alone outside all the time. Being allowed to be part of family life is very important to keeping your new Coonhound happy and healthy. They are above all else, pack dogs, and being a member of your "pack" is just want they thrive on!
