Lewis is a nine-year-old Purebred German Shepherd whose main caregiver passed away a few years ago. His remaining family did what they could to take care of Lewis since his dad's passing but have now had several life changes occur, as well as a move out of the country, that have led them to believe he will do better in a new home.
While Lewis searches for his new home he is being fostered in a very small one bedroom suite with 2 other dogs, several doggie visitors coming and going and a very dog savvy cat. He is going to doggie daycare and having overnight stays at his daycare so he gets used to different environments. Lewis has adapted very well to his foster home situation, the other dogs and cat as well as his visits to doggie daycare. He really likes to hang out with the other dogs and is very respectful of their space in the crowded home he has been living in and at daycare.
Lewis going to see Dr. Harris at Trenant Park Pet Clinic to be neutered and have a few lumps and bumps removed and examined very soon and will then be ready for his new home.
Gary Gibson, a well-known and respected dog trainer/rehabilitator worked with Lewis to help determine what type of home he would be best suited for. Gary agrees that the situation his family is in now is not going to provide, or very likely will not be able to provide, Lewis with what he needs. Gary is willing to provide training and help Lewis adjust by visiting his new home and family to ensure he settles in comfortably if need be. Gary has told us Lewis is a good dog who is, as most Shepherd’s are, protective of his home and his people but not an aggressive dog.
Lewis is a loyal, well-behaved, housebroken boy who knows basic commands and is eager to please. Lewis loves walks but does not require long walks daily, however, he will keep up with you for them or can easily go on short walks a few times a day. More than anything he needs a loving companion with the time to dedicate to him that he lives for.
Lewis was lucky enough in his previous home to have a stay at home Grandma living with him so he is used to having someone home most of the time. He may be out of sorts and may bark or cry when left alone for long periods of time, as he is not used to this. He is doing well at his doggy daycare and we are hoping this will help lessen the stress he feels when away from his people.
As mentioned above, Lewis can be protective, especially of men who he does not know coming to his home. However, with proper introductions he is fine. Lewis is not fond of vet clinics or veterinarians and does not enjoy trips to the vets. He is also afraid of fireworks and thunderstorms and should not be left alone during storms or fireworks, especially in the yard.
Lewis would be best suited for an older couple with a calm home where there is not much change but would also do well in a dog savvy/breed savvy home where he will get the guidance to adapt to changing situations.
*Wonderful news, Lewis has a lovely, retired couple in the interior interested in taking him into their home. Once his final health check has been done we will be taking a trip to introduce him to his potential new home and his potential doggie sister to be! Paws crossed that this becomes his retirement home too!*
