This precious little baby boy was dumped on a busy highway Tuesday, 7/14/09. A man stopped his vehicle just long enough to drop Kurt in the middle of the road and then took off like an escaping bank robber. Although many don't even slow down or stop, this is a fairly frequent occurrence in eastern Kentucky, which is heavily populated with inhumane Appalachian rednecks. As a matter of fact, Kurt was picked up off of the highway by a "Bubba" who lives up the road from Kurt's rescue sponsor. "Bubba" reluctantly had relinquished a 16 lb. dog to this rescue person after having let that dog live outside through the frigid winter--with only a highly ventilated portable carrier for shelter until the rescue person gave him a real dog house for that dog and a decent dog house for a 60 lb. dog who had been living in a dog house so rotten that the back side fell off, resembling a covered bridge in miniature. "Bubba" called and asked the rescue woman if she also wanted the Beagle puppy. You betcha ! ! ! Anything to get innocent creatures away from ignorant inhabitants of this Appalachian region. When rescue woman took Beagle baby Kurt, she thought he looked like he'd had a bad case of fleas; so she immediately gave him a Capstar, which quickly eliminates fleas for a 24-hour period. Fortunately, she took Kurt to the vet the next day. He weighed 10.3 lbs. and was estimated at 4 months of age on 7/15/09. The vet's microscope revealed bad news on two fronts: His fecal sample was positive for hookworms and a skin scrape exposed sarcoptic mange mites. Three days of Panacur eliminated the hookworm infestation. And baby Kurt was medicated for elimination of the sarcoptic mange while quarantined in a cage "all by his lonesome" 7/15-28/09. HEALTHY, fully vaccinated, and neutered, Kurt weighs 30.7 lbs. as of 11/9/09 at approximately 8 months of age and standing 17" tall (at the top of his shoulders) with a torso of the same length (17" from the base of his sweet neck to the base of his cute tail). Since being released from his quarantine "prison," Kurt has spent his time making friends with the feline and canine residents of his foster home. Kurt loves everybody. In fact, one of his best friends is 2 year old Jewel, a small 9 lb. gray tabby cat who LOVES DOGS and likes to play with Kurt's wagging tail when he is contentedly lounging in the cat room. (Even though Jewel isn't yet posted on PetFinder, she would be thrilled to go to an adoptive home with her doggie friend Kurt.) Kurt considers everybody as a potential playmate: big and small, short and tall, canine and human. However, his feline friends are only for sniffing and gently kissing. Sensing Kurt's gentle nature, 10 cats in his foster home have welcomed him as their friend. Kurt is very affectionate and undoubtedly would enjoy the companionship of well-mannered, respectful elementary school age children. Obedience training is always recommended for bonding and safety's sake for any new canine addition to a family, and this affectionate boy should excel with gentle, reward-based training techniques.
