My Story

UPDATE: As life happens we had a twist yesterday at our 'Mingle with our MUTTS!' We had two pre-approved applications and two people who came to see two different dogs. The one family met and greeted everyone but then became drawn to Kian. They went in Concord Pet Store
in Chadds Ford PA - layed on the floor together and fell in love. We got to witness our beautiful Kian *pick* his new Mommy! We always want our dogs to *pick* but this was really very special.

His foster Mom was kind enough to then do a home visit in Lancaster PA
and when he got home he did his 'happy feet' and let his foster Mom know she had done a great job and found his parents for him. Long way from an unwanted chained up dog to box in WV. For us at L&F Dog Rescue --
it was a VERY GOOD DAY in rescue!

August 23: We have had to make a decision based on what we think is best for Kian. We believe that it is in his best interest that he be placed in a home where he will have a tleast one other dog as a brother or sister, he is such a lover of other animals, I worry he would be depressed going from four best friends at my house to none.

July 12: It is just impossible to say enough good things about Kian. He is just the sweetest most gentle and loving creature. He will sit for extended periods with my dogs or cats, and just lick them all over their faces, he loves everyone. He will walk up when I am sleeping and just give me a kiss, and then he will lay back down (we call him the kissing bandit). I was watching the television the other day and a baby was crying, Kian just sat right in front of the television cocking his head back and forth, he had such a concerned reaction to the baby crying, Kian is a super sweet dog.

Update: Kian has come to stay with me and he is a delight!!! He is a big, super sweet dopey dog!! As you see in one of his pictures below, he likes water, he had a blast running and diving in and out of the baby pool. He does very well with other dogs, and has almost earned full normal population status, which means he is only crated when I am out. He does very well with my two cats, he is interested but not too interested. Kian is a dog in every sense of the word, he is a pleasure to have around!!!

I purchased a doggy toy box and filled it with all sorts of dog toys, Kian systematically took all the toys out of the toy box and out to the back yard to play with, so so CUTE!!!

Pictures do not do Kian justice he is a big beautiful dog with long wavy hair and he doesn't shed much which is amazing!!!!

UPDATE: This is Kian's favorite place to me on my sofa. He just cherishes his time being comfortable. I am not a great foster Mom because I do allow them on the furniture --- especially the WV hounds who lived outside their whole lives. I feel they deserve to live the life of a spoiled pet. Now that I have started allowing him on the
sofa, now I will need to ask that he only be adopted into a family who will permit this also. It means the world to him.

Kian is young wonderful boy but he does have some abuse issues (NOT a fear biter at all) so we would only adopt him into a home that has experience with dogs that have been abused.

UPDATE: After watching Kian in my backyard yesterday in the snow and
ice just happy as I have ever seen him, that proves to me that since his ancestors come from Newfoundland where it is very cold, he loves it. He was rolling around, chewing on tree branches
and I had to keep dragging him back inside. All the others went potty and were right back in, but not our Newfie boy! Kian does love to be outside in all kinds of weather so we will really require that he have a nice sized fenced in yard so he can lounge around the way he does. I also feel that he would do best if he had another dog for company. He does love them so.

He has such a sweet and gentle spirit.
He LOVES other dogs and he is the only
one who actually plays with our puppies Coolio, Drake, Mason and Elden. They chew on him and bite him, and he smiles.

He has shown NO interest in children so we would not want to place him in a home with children under 12 years old.

He is what Rosy from Wetzel in WV where he came from --- a GOOD DAWG!! Then again, all L&F dogs are GOOD DAWGS, because we chose our rescue dogs by temperament and for having a sweet disposition.

Kian was abused by a man and sometimes he gets nervous and seems confused about where to go or what to do. Again, I feel it would be in his best interest to be adopted by an experienced dog person who will understand that he is a rescue dog who has experienced unkindness. He is not a fear biter, he just get afraid sometimes.
UPDATE: We just got this e-mail from a Newfie owner who says that our Kian is very much a Landseer Newfie! I put a picture of a show dog Landseer below.

Hello I have a pure Landseer and Kian sure does look like my Landseer newfoundland. I help out with NewPenDel newf rescue. So when I looked at this sweet boy I just had to let you know that to everyone in our Newfoundland club that I had look at the pictures of this boy. Kian sure does look like a pure bred Landseer newfoundland. Some SPCA's have a hard time with knowning that Landseers are pure newfies.

The Landseer is a dog with an outstanding temperament, good, courageous, generous, intelligent, human. Lord Byron wrote of one of this breed: ' Courage without ferocity, and all the virtues of a man without his vices.' It is also a patient dog, mild with guests, and obsequious with its master. He is noble, calm, gentle, loyal and trustworthy with a sweet temperament. Dignified and peaceable. Very devoted. They can become so attached to their owners that they cannot adapt to a new home. Good and brave. Intelligent enough to act on his own when needed. Protective, but tends to place himself between the intruder and his family rather than bark or growl. Landseer's can recognize a dangerous situation and will generally act if the family is threatened. Any dog, other animal, child, or visitor who has no evil intention will receive a friendly welcome, however some males may be aggressive with other males. But the breed is generally good with other animals. Patient, playful, and loving with children; he is a born babysitter. Very sociable. Enjoys the outdoors, but also requires companionship. The Landseer drinks a lot of water and may be messy about it, as he loves to get wet. They tend to drool, though not as much as some other giant breeds. Although puppies require a lot of food, an adult Landseer eats only about as much as a retriever. They love to swim and if backpacking near water, don't let the Landseer carry your sleeping bag - or you may spend a very damp night! This breed may be slightly difficult to train. Training must be conducted in a calm and balanced manner. These dogs are very sensitive to the tone of your voice. This dog's huge body tends to move rather slowly. Take this into account during training.

UPDATE: As always, Rosy was so right about this dear boy. He is a sweet and gentle creature. Seems to have been abused because at first he was afraid to come to me. Now he realizes I am his friend (one of my favorite things in rescue is to win over a dog's heart)
and he comes to me and gives me belly.
I put him in a crate along with our other sweet pup Shi'Ann and they had their dinner together. No food aggression for either and he just treated her like the baby she is. He even made room for her to get comfortable.

I do think he has Newfie in him and full grown he is going to be at least 80. Just had him groomed and he is so very handsome with his curly hair and beautiful fanned tail. He needs to be seen in person to see just how wonderful he is.

Kian, an Irish name pronounced KEY-IN
has arrived from our favorite shelter Wetzel, in WV.

This is what Rosy has to say about him: He is an owner surrender, he is a little over a year old. He is a pleasant pleasant squishy dog. His mother was a black lab, and the owners were not sure what she bred with as all the other pups looked like black
lab.

He is very large and looks like he has landseer newfie in him.

He has been in a kennel his whole life and we were told that he just 'walks in circles all the time.' I took him out to the fairgrounds and let him run and run, and he had so much fun and stayed with me and his room mate IKE.

He needs an Indoor Home with lots of attention, exercise and love as he will be a dedicated family member. Must be an INDOOR dog! this dog Must be cuddled and loved!!!!

Kian has been neutered by us.

We also expect that if no one is home all day, arrangements will be made to provide the dog with at least (1) 'potty break' daily. This can be through a family member, neighbor, or Petsitting service. We know that it is impossible for us humans to 'hold it' for 8-10 hours, so we do not want our 'shelter kids' to be expected to do so.

We have several Petsitting service companies that we can recommend:

We abide by the Humane Association's recommendation. For ANY DOG adoption to have a relatively good chance of success, we believe a child should be 8 years old & up. We only adopt what we call our 'BONA-FIDE Kid Lovers to families with children.' Many dogs do not want to live with children. You should only adopt a dog who LOVES kids to be sure you are able to make a lifetime commitment to a dog.

Any dog/pup adopted from us must have a fenced in property either Physical or Electric Fence. The fence must be installed before we will proceed with processing an adoption application. If you need a fence for your dog, but are not permitted to have a physical fence, or chose not to, please visit our friends at Pet Stop. Mention that you saw them at our website.
