As the person who coordinates which dogs are pulled from the pound, I hear some pretty awful and heart-wrenching stories. Kenny's story was not the most dramatic or the most tragic, but it still made my heart hurt..

Our Memphis coordinator called me in tears about three weeks ago about Kenny. She said she had been at the pound taking pictures and saw Kenny. The shelter staff said, "Don't bother taking a picture of him- he is ugly. No one is going to want this ugly old mongrel."

She looked at Kenny- clearly starved and worn- and just started to cry. His eyes were hollow. All of the other dogs were jumping up on their runs, desperate for an ounce of attention from this animal lover, but Kenny just remained curled up in a ball on the cold concrete floor.

Kenny is older (7 or 8), very plain looking, and quiet. A dog like that has no chance standing out in a shelter that euthanizes 85% of the dogs that walk in.

And so, I told our coordinator to get him out of the shelter and bring him to our vet clinic. Kenny was going to live in the lap of luxury no matter what it took.

Our leap of faith was rewarded instantaneously. One of the vet techs called us and said Kenny was the best dog that we had ever brought to the clinic. That is pretty remarkable given that this vet clinic has vetted over 900 dogs for us in the last three years.

The techs gave Kenny a fluffy bed and it is hard to coax him off of it. We guess that he has never been fed regularly, much less received his very own bed. So, we are looking for a very special family to adopt Kenny. One that will shower him with all the love and attention that he was robbed of during the first 7 years of his life.

Kenny's adoption donation is $300. The adoption donation covers all pre-adoption vet costs (vaccinations, spaying/neutering, deworming, etc.) and includes their transportation up to New England. PAWS New England is not shelter but a rescue and thus is not funded by any city or state organization - we rely solely on the donations of our adopters to help defray the costs associated with saving these precious lives. Unless otherwise stated, all of our dogs are located in Tennessee at our vet clinic's boarding facility or in foster care. If a dog is "local", that means he or she is at one of our foster homes in New England.

Please remember these are rescued dogs, not dogs coming from a breeder or behavior academy. They may have issues that can be worked with - we do our best to determine these ahead of time. Please do not expect them to be perfect. They are not, neither are we - that's why we love them so much!!!
