Meet Howard!
A Special Holiday Offer; we have selected Howard and three other shelter dogs to be a part of a, Home for the Holidays, initiative made possible by some generous STAF volunteers. We are offering eight training sessions and one year of free overnights with the family currently fostering Howie. We would love to place this deserving dog in a loving home for the holidays.
Howard is leaving his past in the rearview mirror! We don’t know much about Howie’s past but suspect he has had a rough start. With the love and attention of his foster parents combined with his optimistic attitude, Howard is thriving and ready to be adopted!
Howard is a loyal and devoted companion. He is super sweet and is often referred to by the volunteers at STAF as the “Big Marshmallow”. Howard is a witty and intelligent dog with a lot character. He has an instinctive desire to please and with positive re-enforcement he is a fast learner. While Howard is very friendly, laid back, and calm with the people he knows, his size, alertness and St. Bernard bark make him a great watchdog. He is a great companion when the home feels a bit empty.
Howard requires a moderate amount of exercise. While he enjoys spending time with his human, he also is very happy to spend time alone. He also likes walks and enjoys outings. He is an exceptional car rider.
Howard has acquired basic obedience skills and is a very good loose leash walker. He is house trained and has no issues with being left alone.
Because of his attachment and loyalty, Howard can sometimes be aloof with strangers. In his first interaction, he has a tendency to size people up and think “Do I want this person to pet me or not”? While he can be wary of strangers, Howard watches and takes his cues from those he knows and trusts.
Howard has also been practicing his meet and greet skills with other dogs. He is slow and steady and can be a bit dog selective with a heavy bias toward confident females.
Howard would do best with an experienced dog owner and a household with older children (Children over 14 years old), no cats, and a spacious fenced in yard!

• All of our animals are spayed/neutered and current on shots.
• We do not do same-day adoptions. You will be asked to return for at least one follow-up visit, then take the dog home for a trial period before officially adopting.
• You must be 21 years or older to adopt from STAF.
• We require a 4-foot-tall physical fence for homes with children under the age of 11. We also may require a physical fence for specific dogs on a case-by-case basis, depending on each dog’s behavior and exercise needs.
• Due in part to increasing coyote activity/incidents in the area and the difficulty of predicting how a dog will respond to invisible fence training, we can not adopt to homes with invisible fences.
• We do request vet and personal references.
• We can facilitate adoptions within a 30-mile radius of our Cincinnati-based shelter.
