Update:
Hero is a Mastiff/Sharpei mix, red/gold, male who is under a year old.
Hero has been neutered and vaccinated and is ready for his new family!
Thank you to all the supporters who helped with his remarkable recovery! He is an awesone dog and will be a wonderful, affectionate companion for his forever family!
Hero Upon Arrival:
Hero will need a long rehabilitation before he is ready for a new home. Hero is suffering from neglect after he started his condition of Demodex. Demodex is a skin condition that is inherited from the mother. Untreated and neglected dogs suffer from secondary skin infections as well as the mites. Their immune systems cannot fight the infections and they lose their hair, have oozing sores, fever and itching. Hero is being treated with ivermectin, antibiotics and soothing baths to help the itching.
He will need immune boosters, good food and lots of water (he was very dehydrated when he arrived) and lots of TLC.
He enjoys lying on the bed, he has comfort for the first time in his short life. Hero is very clean, he has learned where the dog door is and goes outside to potty. He is very gentle and loves to lie with his head on my knee. He accepts his treatments with stoic grace; this lovely boy is a treasure.
Hero has been here for 3 weeks and what a miraculous recovery! He just came back from another veterinary visit and Hero has gained 30 pounds! He is now 98.8 pounds. His demodex is down 60%. His skin has softened and darkened for sun protection. He has soft, red/gold fuzz all over his body. The swelling and fever is gone. His facial flews and wrinkles are no longer swollen and lumpy. He is quite a handsome boy.
Hero has started playing with Porter, Kaleb and my Sweetpea. He no longer sleeps all day and night and he is starting to act like the puppy he really is. Hero is a lovebug - soaking up all the love he can. Our veterinarian says he is coming along very well and will need another 3 weeks of antibiotics and ivermectin and then will be reassessed to see if he can be neutered and vaccinated . He is enjoying his baths to remove the scabs and flaking skin. He has an excellent appetite and is eating quality food twice daily. He has learned "sit" for dinner, travels quietly in the van (our vet is an hour drive) and enjoys squeaky stuffies. Thank you to all his supporters that have donated to his medical fund, toys and food for his care. Hero appreciates your support.
