My Story

Hank - 4 Year Old Male - Easily Overstimulated & Needs a Handler That Will Keep Him In Check - Weary Of Strangers - Once He Knows You, He's Cool - Forms Strong Bond With Handler - Very Biddable Once Expectations Are Set - Appropriate Outlet Would Greatly Benefit Him (Bite Work, Lure, Possibly Scent [Not Tested]) - Does Well In His Crate & Not Destructive (Both Wire & Plastic) - Loves To Engage With The Handler Through Toys (High Toy Drive) - Higher Food Drive - Can Co-Exist Around Dogs With The Right Handling - After He's Around A Dog Enough, He May Want To Play But Has Very Intense Demeanour & Socially Awkward (Has Made a Ton of Positive Progress With Us!) - High Prey Drive (Screaming Shepherd) - With Management In Car, He Can Ride Calm & Quietly - Prefers to Interact Through Toys but Will Accept Cuddles At Times - Suitable For A Home With No Other Dogs Unless Properly Managed - NOT Suitable For A Home With Cats - NOT Suitable For A Home With Children - Not Tested Left Alone Outside Of Crate - Vaccinations UTD - Neutered - On NexGard Spectra (Flea & Tick) - Eating Inukshuk Marine 16 Hank is a newly ? 4 year old German Shepherd male who was pulled by us through @belgianshepherdrescue 30 minutes before euthanasia at the SPCA. He was shown to have serious dog aggression, so of course we took him on (what can I say, we love the spicy ones ????). Upon intake, he was a LOT. He came out of the vehicle, dragging the handler all directions while screaming his head off and didn't stop for some time, even after making it all the way onto a quiet trail. Since then, he has made tremendous progress but his new owner will need to know exactly how to handle a dog like him in order to set him up to succeed. HANK requires firm but fair leadership and guidance and absolutely thrives on it. This style of handling has been of great benefit to him and it has created a strong bond between him and the handler. Once HANK knew what was acceptable (and what wasn't) we realized he was a very biddable dog! He had a base of a couple commands that had been previously built (in French) which he performed very well in easy environments. His 'sit' and 'down' are still in French but other commands are English. His obedience can be very quick especially when working for a reward (ball on string is his favorite) but he needs more exposure to different environments while expectations from the handler are kept high (he's capable). HANK is not for a novice handler, he can easily become too much dog for someone, fast. We have not had any issues handling/manipulating him, even the first few days after his arrival to us. Though, a muzzle was still used as a precautionary measure due to the intensity of the behaviours he was displaying. He was noted to have food aggression at the shelter but we have not seen anything of that nature as he has been with us. If he is not guided appropriately, he tends to become very overwhelmed and will jump to chaotic behavior or flight responses. If he's guided appropriately, he's able to chill and even falls into a more confident role. We wouldn't chalk him up to being an overall nervy dog, it reads more like lack of exposure and socialization. He is currently using a prong collar and e-collar communication has been started. We strongly recommend that his new home continues to use the same tools to keep communication clear and what he has learned intact. Once you really get to know him, he can be a soft and gentle guy during his down time. We've come to connect with him and can see the dog he truly is, underneath it all. We are offering a complimentary One Hour Private Session to his new family to ensure his transition into his forever home goes as smooth as possible - we want to see this guy succeed, he totally deserves it!
