My Story

This is a letter from Hanks’ Mom and Dad. They adopted Hank from Weim Rescue 7 years ago. If after reading it you think Hank might fit in your home please let us know.
We are sending this email to let you know about our current situation with Hank. It is with very heavy hearts and many weeks of deliberate consideration that we are asking for your help in finding a new human(s) and a new home for Hank to spend his last years with.

Over the past 7 years, we have given our love, time, and energy to Hank. He has been the older, more serious counterpart to our silly and goofy female weim/lab mix, and he found his way deeper into our hearts than we ever imagined possible. Hank came to us at 2 years old.

Today, he is a very sweet and extremely loyal 9 year old dog, but he simply does not fit with, nor feel comfortable being in the same home with our new baby. If we did not have a new baby in the home, we would not be contacting you. We realize that so many dogs come to you this way. A baby is born and all of a sudden the dog is out of the house. However, we want to assure you that our decision has nothing to do with time or energy or convenience. This is an issue we have tried to resolve and to work out and to do what is best for Hank, as well.

When we knew we were expecting a baby, we prepared Hank in a number of ways. He has always been a serious guy and we have experienced over the years his intense interest in cats, squirrels, bicycles, scooters, baby strollers, and noisy children. We have persisted in our training with him, and we were very careful to prepare Hank for when our baby was born 9 months ago.

For the first 7 months, while our son was immobile, Hank's behavior was very good and it seemed as though our preparation and training had helped him transition into being the perfect baby dog. However, in the past two months, with the baby's increased vocalization and especially movement, Hank has begun to show agitated behavior. Barking and running around, even when the baby is in his playpen or down the hallway in another room. He is afraid and nervous around the baby.

This decision is very painful for us. We are extremely attached to Hank and will miss him more than we even know. And yet, we know it is the best decision for us, and for Hank, too. Hank needs to be in a home where he is not "on alert" all day long, with all the stresses it brings into the home. And he deserves to be cared for by someone who is serious about loving him and caring for his well being, so we are not interested in finding a quick fix, or moving him anywhere temporarily. We want to find the right person to love and care for him. We will have photos of Hank soon. If you are interested in Hank, please visit our website at http://www.oregonweimrescue.org.
