My Story
Gus is a sweet, happy, confident 1ish year-old German Wirehaired Pointer male who was a transfer from Logan County Shelter in UT as he had no interest in the 5 months he was at the shelter! He was first found as a stray at 3 months old and then lived in the shelter for 5 months. We could not believe this so when we found out about him we swooped him right up!
He is currently in a foster home near Missoula, MT, living in a home with two other bird dogs.
He has been doing great in his foster home. He is now fully potty- and kennel-trained, and he happily sleeps in his kennel all night and during daytime naps, up to 6 hours with proper mental stimulation and exercise. He is very friendly with all other dogs and loves to play. He is extremely affectionate toward everyone he meets, seeking cuddles and love from new human friends.
He is highly motivated by affection, which has made it easy to teach him off-leash recall as he desires the love and praise he gets when he returns to his people, even when other dogs, hikers, or horses are approaching on the trail. He is e-collar trained, understanding that the beep or tone means to check in or come.
He is a very fast and eager learner, responding well to clicker training and treats as well. He recently has been working on “place,” asking him to stay on his bed or placeboard until released. He is making quick progress, able to remain on place while the front door is opened and a guest enters the house, but he is still challenged by new stimuli.
Gus is doing well with walking nicely on a leash with a nose loop or gentle leader on walks around the neighborhood and through pet-friendly stores. He knows the commands “sit,” “wait,” “down,” “here,” and “place.” He rides nicely in the car in his kennel without whining or getting car sick. He is not food-aggressive or possessive of his bones.
He is currently working on his bird dog skills! He demonstrates improving search and strong use of his nose, seeking planted pigeons with increasing desire and intensity. He has not yet pointed a bird, but he points the other dogs in the backyard as they play. He is a confident swimmer and enjoys playing fetch with bumpers. He has been through proper gun exposure without any gun shyness and had no issues with fireworks. He can wait patiently on a stake-out line with other dogs while waiting for his turn to train, although he sometimes barks when his people are out of sight. He does have some fear of missing out, but he does not have separation anxiety.
As a high-energy bird dog, he will require daily exercise and mental stimulation along with continued training and consistency to reinforce the good behaviors he has learned. He currently hikes off-leash for 1-2 hours per day 3-4 days per week with his foster family, and he enjoys on-leash walks on the other days of the week. He is an absolutely fantastic dog and will be an amazing life-long companion for a lucky family! His foster family would love to help you learn how to best maintain Gus’s new skills and behaviors, whether in person or virtually, and they hope Gus finds the amazing home he deserves!
