Gordy is crate trained, and he sleeps in his crate every night, next to his foster parents' bed. He was wary of his leash at first, but now walks on it well, and more confidently. He is a mellow guy, but he seems to enjoy getting out for walks. He really likes to go for short rides in the car, too. He LOVES to snuggle.
Gordy does not seem to have had a great deal of training. Although he is very gentle, he doesn't know many of the basic commands. He's working on "come," "sit," and "stay," and he's also working on his house training. He does seem to understand "down" and "no." So, like most rescue dogs, Gordy would benefit from continued obedience training.
Gordy's foster mom thinks he would do best in a home with adults who have some time to devote to him. He seems to prefer women to men, but he's warming to his foster father. His foster mom suspects he may have had some unpleasant interactions with a man in his past. Gordy doesn't seem to have any experience with children and they can make him a bit nervous. For this reason, we would prefer to place him in a home without small kids.
Update 3/8/08: Gordy is a very sweet boy! He is extreemly gently and submissive and very well behaved. He doesn't jump up at all and is making good progress in his housetraining. Gordy is fine with other dogs and cats.
Gordy would love a nice quiet home with no small children. He is very sweet and gentle, but he is also on the timid side and the noise and actions of small children tend to send him running for cover! Older respectful kids would be fine. Gordy is also unsure of men, but this is also something he will most likely overcome with some stability and patience.
Gordy was owner surrendered due to family illness. They said he is a Shepherd mix and he is 3 years old. He was loved by his family and it is hard on him at the shelter.
He weighs around 40lbs. Due to lack of space he is in a small kennel. His family said he was house trained. He doesnt chew or jump up on people and is calm. He is happy to see the caretakers and always comes over for his pets.He has gotten along great with all the other dogs from tiny to big. He would be an excellent companion for anyone.

This dog is Urgent because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.
CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.
SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.
SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.
HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.
PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
