My Story

Please Welcome Gilbert to PugHearts! Gilbert was picked up by BARC after being Hit By a Car. PugHearts was called and our volunteers picked him up at the shelter to immediately transport him to Sugar Land Pet Hospital where he was seen by Dr. Hendrix. Poor baby was on so many pain meds when he was transported that he could hardly move. X-rays showed Gilbert suffered a left Ilium fracture. Poor baby showed more deep pain than the majority of the pelvic fractures that I’ve seen. Upon arrival in his foster home, poor Gilbert would scream in pain, and urinate when picked up. We weren’t sure if it was swelling from his injuries, pain or just plain fear. I’m happy to report that thankfully that subsided after a few days, but as I’m getting to know Gilbert, it’s clear someone was not good to him. He gets nervous still when meeting new people, but cries and whines to get me to pick him up. His appetite is typical pug strong, and while he heals, he’s getting 2 cups a day, which he loves! Gilbert is still on strict rules of staying separated from the others. One wrong move could shift his pelvis into dangerous territory, making eliminations impossible. He loves the freedom of roaming the backyard, and he gets to share his time with his foster brother and fellow pelvic fracture Godrick. They are enjoying their healing time together and spend their days with their pens set up right next to each other. Gilbert had his intake and received all his vaccinations. Thankfully, this poor boy caught a break and is heartworm negative. He will be neutered and have follow up X-rays at that time to see how his pelvis is healing. Callus typically forms in 3 months or so, and at that time he will be able to play with the others, and after awhile he will be cleared to adopt. Gilbert is 4 years old, and a small boy, weighing in at about 16 pounds. It’s sad to think his future started when he was hit by car, but it did, and it’s brighter than ever. I have no doubt that Gilbert will make a complete recovery. As with all my pelvic fractures, daily joint supplements for maintenance will be recommended.
