FOSTER-TO-ADOPT HOMES NEEDED!!
***Please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form***
We would love to welcome Gerti into the Fetch + Releash family on September 15, 2024 (subject to change). In order for Gerti to come into our care, we need a committed family. As a foster-to-adopt family, you'll be expected to take her home on her arrival date. You will then have two weeks to get to know your new furry house guest before committing to adoption. At the end of two weeks, if you choose not to move forward with adoption, we simply ask that you continue to provide a safe and loving home until their new forever family can be found.
Each bio was created by our rescue partners based on their interactions with the dogs. Fetch + Releash has a full disclosure policy however we cannot guarantee a dog against parasites or diseases, nor can we guarantee a dog's nature/behaviour. Many of these dogs are coming directly from the shelter and so you should expect there to be a transitional period. Be prepared to deal with common issues like potty training, leash walking, and socialization. Cat and kid safety assessments are often based on their personality and not necessarily on actual interactions.
Where possible, the majority of vetting will be completed prior to coming to Canada, however, foster-to-adopt families may be required to travel to our partner vet in Mississauga, ON for further vet care.
During your foster-to-adopt trial, you'll receive the support of a Fetch + Releash mentor to help you through the transition and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
Foster-to-adopt families will be required to pay a $200 deposit on the adoption fee and sign our foster-to-adopt waiver in advance. If you choose not to adopt, your $200 will be refunded to you within 30 days of your dog being adopted into a new family provided you see your pup through to adoption. If you choose not to see your dog through to adoption, you will forfeit your deposit.
Foster-to-adopt families will be expected to provide their own supplies. Visit https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info for more info on mandatory supplies.

Gerti / Female / 8 months / 20 pounds / Rat Terrier mix / Good Apartment Dog / from Tennessee
Looking for the perfect apartment pooch? Gerti is your gal! Rescued from an accidental litter, Gerti was saved along with her sister when their owner decided to get their mother spayed to prevent further pregnancies. Gerti was rescued at just 10 weeks old, but unfortunately, due to black dog syndrome, she's been overlooked for adoption time and time again.
Gerti is a sweetheart with a touch of shyness. She may be a bit nervous initially, but she will thrive in a loving home where she can settle in, decompress, and let her true personality shine. Despite her shy nature, Gerti has adapted well to the kennel setting and did amazingly in her crate at the vet's office during her recent spay procedure. This short test suggests she would adapt well to a crate in her new home, if crate training is implemented from the start. Since she has spent most of her short life in a shelter setting, her new family will need to work with her on the basics, such as potty training and mastering walking on leash. Further training commands like sit, stay, heel and much more will also need to be learned. Training is a great way to build a strong bond with your new companion as well as an opportunity to build their confidence.
Although Gerti has not had any exposure to children, her temperament suggests she would get along fine with older children that can respect her space while she decompresses and adjusts to her new environment. Gerti has been tested with cats and during the brief test it's expected she would adapt to life alongside a feline friend. Gerti has lived her short life alongside her sister which suggests she would enjoy a home alongside another confident and respectful dog that can show her the way.
Gerti is very gentle, quiet and personable (albeit a bit shy). She is ready to be adopted and become a loving companion in a caring home and learn what the good life is all about!
When she came into care, Gerti tested positive for ehrlichia which is a tick borne disease that can stay in the bloodstream for many years. Further testing confirmed that the ehrlichia is in a dormant state and Gerti should not experience any clinical symptoms. It is recommended that ehrlichia positive dogs get an annual blood test to monitor the anaplasmosis and that any pre-op blood work should include a CBC test and platelet count before any surgeries or dental extractions.
As a condition of the adoption contract, Gerti’s new family will be required to attend and complete a basic obedience class at their own cost (proof required).
