My Story

You can see many more photos of Gabriel here on our facebook page (copy and paste the link below): https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?vanity=FarfelsFarm&set=a.1022113836167574 Gabriel is truly one of the greatest dogs we've rescued. He has such a sad past, that it makes you want to love him even harder. Gabriel is kid friendly, cat friendly, and dog friendly! He's the total package! Gabriel had a rough start to his life, so he is sure living his life to the best now. Can you imagine a dog being safer at an overcrowded high-kill shelter than in his previous home? Well, that was Gabriel's life. This very loving guy had a horrible owner who let him suffer. For who knows how long, poor Gabriel was left chained up just outside, being deprived of food and water. For month after painful month, Gabriel was forced to lay on hard cement with no shade or roof. He stayed outside, attached to his heavy chain in the heat of the Texas summer, and the cold of winter. Gabriel's body was slowly giving up, and he no longer had the energy to stand. Neighbors started noticing Gabriel, unable to move in the filthy yard, and asked the owner to relinquish him to the authorities. Sadly, he refused. It wasn't until the authorities intervened that Gabriel was thankfully confiscated and removed from the property. A cruelty case was filed against the previous owner. (The picture of skinny Gabriel laying on the ground was taken by the neighbor and given to the police). Even though the shelter was nursing Gabriel back to health, with abuse cases, strays, and relinquishments coming into the shelter every day, he was placed on the euthanasia list due to lack of space in the shelter. This brave boy has fought so hard to live for so long that Farfel's Rescue just couldn't turn our backs on him. We spoke up to save Gabriel's life and he's now safe and sound and has made his way to Colorado. Gabriel now sleeps in his foster moms bed at night, and is happier than ever, and hoping to find his forever home soon. Gabriel has put on weight, and has become a very healthy and happy boy. Gabriel is around 5 years old (but acts like he is 2!), and is 48 lbs. (He was 35 lbs when confiscated and taken to the shelter). Gabriel is believed to be a Shepherd / Lab mix. From Gabriel's foster mom: * * * * “Gabe has been with me for over a month now and he is turning into the happiest little Colorado dog. He loves toys, people, dogs, and has learned to live amazingly well with my cat. Gabe is an active boy and loves to play, walk, run, and hike. On days that I can’t give him as much exercise as he needs I let him run/walk on my doggy treadmill which he absolutely LOVES. He loves the water, sunbathing, and rolling around being a goober. He has met and lived with dozens of dogs while with me and has done amazingly well with all of them. We take intros slow so dog parks and traditional group play daycares are likely still a little too overstimulating for him to participate in. When you’re not out adventuring Gabe is a total snuggle bug. He loves a good belly rub, and he does occasionally ask for them on walks too. Every time I let him out of the crate he walks right into me for a hug. He has met quite a few kids from 4-13 years old and was very friendly with them as well. Gabe came to me to work on his manners and basic skills which he had never been taught before and he is doing VERY well! He is extremely smart and super food motivated. When you’re not doing anything he will settle on his own, go in his crate and is not destructive in it while you’re gone, he waits before eating his food, he walks well on a leash in areas he knows (new areas are still a work in progress but it’s nothing unmanageable), he doesn’t counter surf, he loves the car, he chews on his toys and nothing else, he waits before going through doorways and thresholds, and he’s even starting to work on off leash skills on a long line. He recently went camping with me and my 3 dogs and he blew us all away with his great behavior. He settled on his bed when we were just hanging out and he didn’t even try to wander away! He did a 6 mile hike that ended up being on part of an ultramarathon course and he got on and off the trail several dozen times with ease and was so calm and well mannered while the racers passed us. When we were done he took a dip in the lake and rolled around in the wildflowers while we ate and hung out. After being stuck on a chain for so long (before being rescued), Gabe really wants to explore the world. I have quickly fallen in love with this boy and what an amazing dog he is turning into. All Gabe wants to do is please you. If you are an active, patient, and loving family, he has been waiting for you for far too long!” * * * * Gabriel is now in great health, and so happy! He is up to date on his vaccines, but not yet neutered. Farfel's does cover the full cost of his neuter, which is required to finalize any adoption. Gabriel is available for adoption now.
