JANUARY 16, 2009 UPDATE
Friendly is training for the Yukon Quest, and his foster mom wrote in with an update:
Friendly did the first 100 miles of the Copper Basin and did very well. I dropped him for a sore tricept to avoid further injury. He is a happy guy and well behaved is is now fine with being boottied and harnessed. He is still a bit shy with strangers but is getting so much better. He now has a very efficent, beautiful trot. Occasionally when moving slowly he gets distracted and confused, but with a little encouragement he is back to buisness. He is completely non-agressive and a good eater, but only fair at snacking at this point though he is getting better.
APRIL 9, 2008 UPDATE
We had skijored with him a couple of weeks ago and he did pretty good for being so shy. He is a VERY sweet dog but also timid and unsure. He ran quite well in our team today. He came from sprint lines but seems to like the slower speeds a lot better. He is always hard on the line and has an efficient fast trot when the speeds slow down. He would make a nice addition to a rec team where the people are gentle and kind. No dew claws. Weight: 40ish.
MARCH 20, 2008
Friendly comes from a sprint mushing home. Born in 2005, and has an excellent pedigree which traces back to Wright, Drake Leonard and Champaine bloodlines. Friendly was brought to the shelter because he doesn't have top end speed for open racing. He is rather small but is nicely built. Friendly is quiet and gentle in the yard, but is raring to go when in harness.
Friendly went skijoring with our volunteers on March 14th:
"He is a pretty shy boy that doesn't like to be approached from behind and is a bit hand shy being petted. We teamed him with another small dog that was very experienced and off they went. Friendly did really well for being timid and had never skijored before. He only did a half mile but is a very driven dog with good speed. At the truck you could tell that with time and patience he would come around quickly. He was wagging his tail and really wanted affection, but is afraid right now so you have to go slow and gentle."
