My Story

This is a courtesy listing

Dixie is a sweet, easy-going girl who very much deserves her own forever home. She's a 2-year-old lab/pit mix who loves to be with humans. She likes to snuggle and play, but she also likes a good nap (or two) at your feet. She also enjoys playing with the other dogs in her foster home. And when she's happy to see you (which is always), she wags her cute little body in half. And when you scratch that sweet spot behind her ears, you'd swear she was smiling at you.

Dixie would be a great addition to any family because of her good manners and sweet disposition. She's done well around children as young as 3 years old. Dixie's history: A few months ago, Dixie was found wandering the campus of a local high-tech company. A few employees corralled her to get her off the streets, then one person took her home with him until they could find her family. After a week of searching for Dixie's family, the employees finally found a flyer about Dixie and reunited her with her family. Flash forward a month: One of those same employees was browsing the Town Lake Animal Center Web site and noticed a familiar face in the endless photos of homeless dogs -- Dixie. Dixie's family had surrendered her to Town Lake because she was an "escape artist". But all Dixie needed was a little love and attention from her humans. While filling out the surrender forms, her ex-family wrote that they left her outside 24 hours a day, every day. Who wouldn't try to escape from that? Town Lake did a medical evaluation of Dixie and found out that in addition to just being dumped off by her family at a shelter, she was heartworm positive. Dixie's sweet temperament impressed the Town Lake staff so much that they decided to treat the heartworms -- a rare decision for an overcrowded shelter euthanizing over 30 animals every day. So 6 weeks of treatment later, Dixie had a clean bill of health and went up for adoption. Meanwhile, those same high-tech employees were watching Dixie's progress closely. But Dixie's deadline for adoption loomed, and no one gave her a chance to prove what a wonderful addition she would make to any family. On the day that Dixie was scheduled to be euthanized, one employee picked her up from Town Lake and drove her to the home of two others who had volunteered to serve as a temporary foster home for a couple weeks. Thankfully, Dixie is now out of danger and in foster care. But what she needs now is for someone to take her into their family and give her the love and attention that she truly deserves after all that she's been through.
