My Story

9 year old Demetri, born 04/13/2015, joined Mattie's Place when his family separated and they could no longer care for their 4 chihuahua's; Demetri, Ellie and their offspring; Elliott and Penelope. We welcomed them to Mattie's Place and all went to separate foster homes and are doing exceptionally well He is up to date medically, including a dental in November 2023. He weighed in at 6 kg (13 pounds) at his vet appointment. Demetri has lived with men and women without issue, but he's a very loyal dog and can show some stranger danger to men when he's with his foster Mom. Demetri could resource guard very very high value items. He plays well with toys and offers a playful growl when playing with his foster Mom. This is very different than a resource guarding warning. Due to his small size, I will not place him in a home with a dog larger than 20 pounds. He is cat friendly with a dog savvy cat. Demetri lived in a country setting. He's being fostered in a very hustle and bustle city setting right now in foster care, which is not his vibe. A home with a backyard, or quiet suburbia would be best for him so he doesn't have to feel so overwhelmed when outside, as he does really enjoy being out and enjoying walks. Demetri does fine walking past people as long as they ignore him. But if they approach him he will bark at them, male or female, and if they tried to pet him my presumption would be that he'd nip. He is terrified of anything moving pst him quickly like a runner or skateboarders/cyclists etc. He will also have vocal reactivity to bigger dogs, but he's ok with smaller dogs or similar size. These behaviours are fear driven and why he'd do best in a quieter neighbourhood. UPDATE APRIL 9, 2024 Demetri woke up with some back pain. His foster Mom could see he was uncomfortable, though still doing all the things; eating, drinking, pee'ing, poop'ing, walking etc. I brought him to the vet and we ran full bloodwork and all came back normal. He's been put on some pain meds and medication to reduce disc inflammation. He’s made a full recovery without further incident. FROM HIS FOSTER: Demetri is the sweetest boy. He wants to be around his humans as much as possible. He feels safest on the couch, this is where he likes to sleep and play, and curl up with his humans. At first he wasn’t sure about my cat (my cat is bigger than him), however in 3 days they were comfortable in each other's presence. They coexist well and have even become playful with each other. I don’t see resource guarding too much, it seems like normal play behaviour. We play by pulling on his stuffies, and I throw and he retrieves it. He growls when he's holding his toy, but in a playful way. He loves playing fetch and tug-o-war. It took him a few days to get comfortable on walks. We would take a few steps and he would stop and look at me and not want to move. He started to pick the direction we would walk in and he slowly got more comfortable, to the point where we walk a full block and he doesn’t stop. He jumped on my lap and was trembling during a thunderstorm. I was able to comfort him. He is afraid of stairs and will sit for you to pick him up to go up or down the stairs. ----------------------- To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in his current & previous setting.
