We first told you the story of Delgada when she arrived at the Refuge in September. Severely emaciated she was a critical intake, barely hanging on to life after having been found on the side of the road wandering. She was so hungry she was seen eating rocks, which wore down her teeth. Weighing only 40 pounds, Delgada was a 1 out of 9 on the body condition scale, which rates a dogs body fat. Not only was she incredibly skinny, she was also suffering from tick born diseases and tested positive for heart worms. Her bony body was covered in no only ticks but fleas as well.
The first step in Delgada's recovery was to get her to put weight on, feeding her several smaller meals throughout each day. She was placed on antibiotics for the tick disease and had blood work done weekly to check her levels. Once she reached a healthier weight her treatment for heart worms began and she was eventually spayed.
Today Delgada is a healthy and happy girl, you would never know to look at her the battles she fought just to stay alive. She is a sensitive dog, eager to please her people friends and receive treats and pets as rewards. Delgada does suffer from fecal incontinence, perhaps the reason she was dumped by an owner no longer willing to care for her and left to fend for herself. We believe all dogs in shelters deserve a second chance at their own forever home but maybe no other dog deserves it quite as much as Delgada.
