My Story

Being fostered in Victoria Darla is an 8 mo old black female lab(?) mix, 52 lb. She looks much like her momma, who weighs 60 lb. Here dad is a Dutch Shepherd. Behaviour: Sweet and shy with new people, very affectionate once she knows you. New people need to be introduced thoughtfully. She especially loves women. From her foster, who is also fostering Bernie “Darla and Bernie are affectionate, curious and clever and will make their future adoptive parents very happy. They are learning so much and conquering their fears of new people and situations.” Darla is not a begger (hasn't been spoiled by people food) and is not resource protective. She is happy to share everything - kibble, toys and beds Good with dogs: Darla likes other dogs, though needs slow introductions as she grew up with only her siblings and mom around. It took her 10 days to settle in to her foster home and now she is good friends with her foster’s female the same age. Cats: Unknown Children: Good with dog-savvy, calm children. Darla met a 7 yr old girl and was very sweet and gentle (see video in comments). Housetrained: Yes Training: Great on a leash. Comes when called. Darla is still figuring out life in a home, so training has just started. She knows Sit and Lie Down. Very treat motivated, which will help with training. She is quiet. She is learning that she is only allowed to chew her toys. Crate trained: Good in crate, sleeps through the night. Great in cars Behaviours that need work: Jumps up on people she knows. Needs to learn that Sit gets attention instead. Needs more socialization. Counter surfs, which is being worked on. Ideal home: Patient adults and children with dog experience who will patiently socialize her. Ideally another playful dog. Darla and her siblings are scared by sudden movements, we think they were hit by their previous owner, so no young children is best. As with any shy dog, Darla needs her people to be her leaders and protectors, and have clear rules and boundaries so that she can relax. Rescue story: Darla and her 4 siblings were born to a momma who was an outside dog. Mom and pups were kept in an outdoor kennel. Their owner went to jail when they were very young. The neighbours took it upon themselves to look after the dogs – feeding and water, cleaning the kennel and improving shelter from storms and tornadoes, leash training, and looked for a rescue to take them before the owner got out of jail in July - because who knows what would happen to them then. That’s when we stepped in, just in time too before a hurricane hit. More photos and videos are in the comments on Darla’s facebook profile (change Most Relevant to All Comments). She is being fostered with Bernie who is also available for adoption. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=936762514919518&set=a.147052423353104 All our dogs are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested, microchipped, and dewormed. Darla is heartworm negative.
