My Story

UPDATE: We got a Christmas card from Cosmo's family! He's happy, healthy, and still gets in to trouble from time to time.

Cosmo came from Virginia with Heidi. Where he came from originally, I'm not sure. He was in a shelter, and he was adopted once, and returned after they found out he needed ear surgery. A second family adopted him and got his surgery done, but returned him when they found out he'd need a second surgery. A third family adopted him and had his ears fixed for good (they ended up having to take a piece of his ear off). They were going to return him because they claimed he couldn't be potty trained. Just before they were going to surrender him again, Heidi's owner told them that I could help, so he flew to Minnesota with Miss Heidi for rehabilitation.

When he first arrived here, Cosmo did not like having his ears touched at all. For a long time they had been a source of great pain to him (recurring ear infections). He had to be in a crate at night to avoid potty messes (and he never did have an accident at my house), and we also discovered that he was quite the escape artist.

My brother had a friend over and he just fell in love with Cosmo. Originally I had told him that I wouldn't let him adopt Cosmo because he had two baby sisters in the house and I was afraid Cosmo may bite if they yanked on his ears. After a while, his mom came over to see the dog that her son just couldn't stop talking about. I explained to her about his ears and his alleged potty training problems, and we decided to give it a try. They would take Cosmo over night and if it worked out, they could keep him for a few days to get a feel for it. If they wanted to adopt him at that point, they could. If not, I would take him back and find him another home.

Cosmo did end up staying with them. He's still there now. He's never had an accident in the house, and he's never snapped at anybody. They love him, and can't understand why anyone would want to send him away.
