My Story

Meet Cookie.

Attractive and active single black female seeks long-term loving and committed relationship. Enjoys water sports (playing in the hose), long walks, running, seeing new places, and food. If you enjoy intellectual stimulation (coming up with new ways to keep me busy) and are looking for a partner who is not afraid to have opinions then we can make beautiful music together. Couch potatoes need not apply.

Seriously though - Cookie is a little over one year old and very bright - she can learn by example. She has an assertive personality and knows what she wants with flashes of the puppy who desperately wants approval. She needs someone who will enjoy her creativity and the challenge of keeping her mind and body occupied. She thrives on consistency and is not a dog that punishment will work well on. Someone who can guide her to do the right thing by being firm when necessary and reward her when she gets it right will see her blossom into a sweet girl. She is very food motivated - which is good because there doesn't seem to be much else that will motivate her. Although the vet told me she was brought in for euthanasia due to excessive barking she is not particularly noisy, however she does tend to talk when she is trying to get her way. She seems to like men although she does fine with me as well. She has a clear expectation that she will be allowed on the furniture and I have chosen not to fight that battle with her since there are other, more important things we need to work on. She knows sit and down (lie down) but is not consistent and has not been taught to hold a position. She can walk on leash but we are working on not pulling. She has an issue with anyone holding her by her collar or trying to pull on it but she has gone from putting her mouth on me every time to only doing so occasionally and doing a lot more grumbling. She will accept being crated but in general does not like to be confined and it dramatically increases her fear reaction to other dogs. She is also very curious and so every closed door or gate is a challenge that she needs to explore.

In some ways she reminds me of a cat as she is curious and independent but also likes to snuggle when she feels like it. Her personality may change somewhat as she relaxes more since she is already asking for attention more than she did at first.

The two issues of most concern right now are her fear of other dogs and her food guarding issues with them. The vet told me that Cookie was terrified of her small dogs when she brought her home but did finally warm up to them in a day or two. When she initially met Sammy at PetSmart she was OK. However when I brought her home she was very fearful (barking and snapping) and if she was in her crate, it was worse. She did gradually get over it over the course of a few days and now will play tug-of-war and chase, and wrestle with them but she needs more exposure to different dogs to help her overcome this. She also has some food guarding issues. Initially she would not tolerate the other dogs even being in the kitchen with her. We've been working on it and now she will sit and wait her turn for a treat in the group but we feed her and give her any treats that take a while to eat in her crate - even so, if one of the other dogs approaches the crate she tells them off.

Cookie will be a great dog for someone who can appreciate her personality and give her the structure she needs as she is a dog that will test her limits - at least occasionally.

Adoption Process: We are not first come first served. Indigo Rescue focuses on finding good matches between dogs and families to ensure life long adoptions. We deliver all dogs to their new homes.

All of our dogs are in foster homes. We have adoption events at the Beaverton PetSmart every other Saturday where you can meet many of our dogs at once. Click Here for our Calendar of Events. Or, if you're interested in a particular dog, you can send an e-mail via the e-mail link at the bottom of the page ("Email Indigo Rescue") with answers to the questions below. If the dog seems compatible with your situation we'll set up a time for you to meet the dog.

Do you have other pets now? (briefly describe)

Have you had pets in the past? What became of them?

What kind of exercise will you provide for the dog? (type/frequency)

What is your schedule like? How long/often will the dog be alone?

Where will the dog be while you're gone? Where will the dog be when you're home? Where will the dog sleep?

Who else lives in the home? Do you have children? How old are the children?

Are you in a home or apartment? How long have you lived there? Do you have a fully, securely fenced yard? (type/height)

Do you own or rent your home?

What changes in your life are likely in the next 10+ years (or life span of the dog) and how will the changes affect the dog? (moving, job or schedule change, school, having children)

Anything else you'd like us to consider in finding the right dog for your family?

Thank you for your interest in adopting and saving a life!

Indigo Rescue only adopts to homes within 50 miles of Portland.
